We actually (thank goodness for the internet/and talking to other pit owners) know this breed...Yes the American Pitbull terrier has historically been bred to excel in combat with other dogs...But we still would not want anyone to ever wish death on our dog...Who is more gentle than Sammi or Kasey put together... Everyone is entitled to their own opinions regarding this breed...But just as a pitbull can kill so can any other breed...Sammi has snapped at people in the street and she is what I consider an ankle biter...Doesnt mean she cannot kill if she has to (wheter it be a a small child or another dog...) From a website: At one time Pitbull was used as a national symbol of courage and pride, and IMO I feel the breed is largely misunderstood today...Their history dates back to the late 18th early 19th century...Like any other breed of dog, the key areas of focus for ensuring a happy, well adjusted American Pit Bull Terrier as a pet are: owner education, proper breeding, socialization, and training... I will not say anymore about Storm and how wonderful my family thinks he is...I just get upset to think people would say THE WHOLE BREED needs to be killed or taken down...Because ANY BREED can be taught to kill/fight...and this is why I had to post....I dont want to start an argument/heated discussion with anyone! Because u all are awesome people :) Lots of Love Fran |
I guess that we will just agree to disagree. :) You have your views as do I. I am glad that your pit mix is a part of your family. |

I understand where you are coming from fran. Ive seen small breed dogs charge children as well as big breed dogs. It does mostly stem from irresponsible owners and i believe sometimes it also stems from the breeders. As any good breeder knows puppies need to be socialized from the beginning. Also many pit and rot breeders do a lot of inbreeding which im sure plays a role in mental behavior as well. You dont have defend your stance on how you feel some people dont like certian breeds and that is thier perogative/preference. This is a very touchy subject especially for those who have had bad expieriences with certian breeds, and i respect that. Im sure it can be very traumatic. I plan on getting a rottie if we ever buy a house with more land and more room. My husband used to raise them when he was younger and they were so good and loving. I feel bad for the poor lil yorkie who suffered and hope they find the irresponsible owners. |

I am sorry, I was going to just pass this thread up but after reading this I had to ad my comment. My friend has had dobermans all his life and they arent an innocent breed either. They are prone to being psychitso. They will bit the hand that feeds them. He has had his 2 for 6 years now and I still will not trust them around my children. However, my kids have been raised with rotties and I will defend that breed until the day that I die. I have worked as an animal control officer, I have seen the ins and outs of all the different breeds, It isn't the breed of dog. It is how it is bred and how it is raised, If a dog is bred from 2 aggresive parents it is going to be mean. Plain and simple. |
I hate reading these type of stories. Its so soad. I really feel sorry for the yorkie owner. |
I believe that whatever bloodlines mixed to make pittbull cause them to have unpredictable and agressive temperments. Some people may have a pittbull for life and never have it snap out...but they always run the risk that it might. I know that a few years ago in my town a woman was killed in the hallway of her apartment building. Her neighbor had 2 pittbulls and they heard her in the hall when she came home from work. For some reason they knocked down the door to the apartment and tore the poor inocent woman to pieces. She had met these dogs a million times before and they were friendly on all previous occasions. So I personally will never trust one near my Sydney...or in the future, my children. Just my personal opinion. |

The funny thing is before I ever owned dogs ON MY OWN (meaning not living at home w/ my parents) I always thought little dogs were nasty and mean. My parents had a beautiful german shepherd and he was the most loving and gentle dog I ever knew. He was part of the family and we all still mourn his death. But I remember always disliking little dogs because they always bark and nip at people. Of course my opinion has drastically changed before and since owning a Maltese and a Yorkie. But I go back to my original belief that it's the way the animal is raised and socialized. |
There are several reasons this breed has a bad reputation and they are all the fault of humans, not the breed. The number one reason the breed has a bad rap is they are a popular choice for thugs and people who think they need a killer dog who go out and aquire a Pit Bull. Although not naturally aggressive toward people, through many methods including horrific abuse, people can make them into people biters. Whenever a Pit Bull does something bad, the media jumps all over it and airs a story about it. Whenever a Pit Bull does something heroic the media just ignores it so all the public hears about are mean Pit Bulls and not the nice ones. Another reason that contributes to the bad repuation is some people who are not prepared or educated enough for dog ownership acquire a Pit Bull and as its growing up never give it the leadership that all dogs need and crave. You see, the dog views it and the members of it's household as it's 'pack.' It is critical to a dog's sense of well being that it knows where it fits in in the social hirearchy and that there is a strong leader of it's 'pack.' Some people let their dogs grow up letting them do whatever they want and the dog learns that the humans are not strong leaders so it tries to fill the leadership position itself. When this happens the dog acts aggressivly to all 'pack members' it feels are under it when it feels they are out of line to keep order just like pack leader wolves and dogs do in the wild. People think the dog is just being a vicious Pit Bull but in reality it thinks it is ensuring the survival of it's 'pack' by giving it strong leadership. Lastly there are some very trashy dog breeders that breed these dogs soley so they can sell the puppies for money that give no through or care to the quality of dogs they breed and often very substandard dogs find their way into their breeding program and substandard puppies with substandard temperaments and often ill health are produced. Good dog breeders bend over backwards making sure the dogs they breed have good health and temperament. |

A lot of a breed's personality characteristics are born in. For example yorkies are a high energy/high strung breed, they need lots of human interaction and should not be left alone for long periods of time, they are typically harder to train than other breeds. These are all characteristics of the yorkie breed. These things were not learned from their owners. HOWEVER these characteristics do not apply to every single yorkie. Some of your yorkies were very easy to train. Some of your yorkies are not high energy at all. This does not mean that the breed characteristics are wrong. But there are variations to every rule. Those of us who have owned pittbulls who are/where perfectly friendly and sweet for their whole lives are lucky to have a sweet pet like that. But it isn't a bad idea to be on guard around strange dogs especially ones who have agressiveness as a common breed characteristic. Just as a percaution...not to bash pittbulls. |
