My Husband wants a Scottish Terrier
 

I have never had one of them and loved them but I wonder if he is making a mistake? He says he cant bear to see one like scooby as it will hurt too much right now. I told him we can get a yorkie later on and by that time the pain would have subsided. He wants a scottie NOW and has some in mind. Is this a bad thing to do to get another breed of dog? Does anyone in here have a scottie and can tell me some tips? I hear they are quite stubborn and like to wander off and must be kept at all times on a leash? Also hard to house break and train in gerneral. Any heads up on this?

At the moment we cant find a good yorkie from a reputable breeder, even if he wanted one now. Most of the ones who welped are already sold and so the next litter will come in the late summer to fall:( . I dont want to rush and buy from those back yard breeders without papera s you never know waht you might get. But he said we can have a scottie soon. I am confused:(

That is what I tell him but he said he wants anothr dog now. I dont mind a new puppy now, but I think it is disrespectful to our scooby to bring one home so soon.

Hubby is hurting and missing the baby in the house. I can tell you the night I lost Lulu I was admant at first about no more pets. But as the night wore on I realized that I could not have a baby seeing as I knew of the joy that Lulu gave me.

My new Pup Zoey was not a replacement or meant as showing disrespect to my baby Lulu but it was my need to continue loving and sharing my life with a Yorkie.

Your hubby is not trying to be disrespecful he is trying to cope and help his pain as best as he can. He might be a bit wary of the Yorkies because of potential health issues.

I think you are absolutely right. I have always liked the scotties, but didnt know much about them more then their stocky cocky looks. He said he can get one now, next week or in a month because there are quite a few good breeders with them. They are very expensive dogs and much bigger than our baby was and I wonder if he does this, which he may very well do, is this going to be a bad match for little 3.75lb Bandit the Pom? He is not reluctant about the health issues as all dogs have those, but I think the resemblence of scooby may bring back sad painful tears to him. I am not sure how I will feel, I may bawl and get depressed also if I saw a baby yorkie at the moment. While searching the breeders I felt to cry each time I saw a little scooby looking at me. I am very confused. The scottie is sooooo different to the yorkie, while portraying still some traits of all terriers.:confused:

I think they are cute but I know they are runners and they are quick. My cousin has one and no matter how much obedience they teach it every time it has a chance it is out the door and down the road. This is there second one the first one was hit by a car and they could not save her.

That is what I read, that they are runners by instinct and no matter how much obedience they get, they do their own thing.

We had a scottish terrier when I was a kid. They are very much a one person dog. She was meaner then dirt & would bite everyone that wasn't my brother. She bit me repeatedly & i lived with her. She also could not swim. I accidentally knocked her into the pool(i was 3) & she almost drowned my brother held her head above water until someone came & helped her out. Our scotty never ran away until she was really old & we think she went off to die alone, she never came back. She also wasn't that hard to potty train.

However, one of my neighbors has a scotty & he is so sweet & played really well with my Logan, so maybe we just got a bad one, I don't know.

I've met a few Westies & think they are absolutely adorable & they are a bit smaller then scotties. I also like the look of cairn terriers.

I have friends that have a white scottie - Maggie - and she is a riot. Very smart, too. Potty trained in no time. She walks at least twice a day and has a tether in the back yard because of where they live. And, like yorkies, it is all about her:) . She is incredibly spoiled, super sweet disposition, great watch dog, and loves people. She seems calmer than our 2 and plays well with their kitties and kittens(they take care of many ferel cats). As far as disrespectful, not at all. We got Roxy right after my dh passed away to help fill the void and she was a Godsend. An addition to the family is not a replacement, it is a tremendous help with coping with the grief. It's a hard decision, but your heart will tell you what to do and when to do it. I'll keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.

I was afraid to get a bigger pup because I went to a friends house and her 4 month puppy was terrified Chewy...It was as big as him and he was rough on poor chewy... he was trying to run away and hide!!!! Think about this because a puppy of another breed could over power your baby and they don't know any better...

Where do ya live. My breeder has 5 puppies ready to go now. I think they are 14 weeks. SHe is very picky about who they go to though... that's why she still has these puppies left. If you get the Scottie, would you still get the yorkie in the next few months are would you not get a yorkie(or any other dog for that matter)?

If the yorkie breed is really where your heart is, and you all can only get one, I would wait until you are ready for the yorkie...you don't want to be in a position where you've gotten the scottie then later regret(for lack of a better word) it because that yorkie urge is hard to lose.....I don't doubt you wouldn't love the scottie no matter what but if you have to get 1, I'd wait..:)

Yeah!!! Good for you...but I do love all kinds of dogs and would probably have a couple different breeds running around if I had the space...now if you guys can get both, I'd say go for that too!! You would have to be cautious with the size thing though!

Look forward to seeing your future furbaby!!! Maybe you can start looking now for breeders with pregnant Dams, they wouldn't be due for about 2 months then the babies have another 10-12 weeks after that...those months will have passed before you know it...

you know, before scooby died, we wre going to get NUMBER three anyway this year, so yes, I will get three dogs in the end. I heard once you have one you want more and how true that is. I still like the scotties tho.

We babysat my MIL's Scottie a few years ago when she was recovering from knee replacement surgery. We had her for about a month and lost her 4 or 5 times:eek: When someone opened the door, ZOOOM, out she'd go! The more you called for her and chased her, the longer it took to catch her. We finally figured out that it was a GAME to her and to ignore her, she'd come back quicker:laugh: Man, I was dreading telling my MIL that we had lost her Maggie, but we held on to her more strictly after those few incidents (one of which was at a park and she slipped her collar:eek: ) and though I loved her very much, was SO glad to see her go home:laugh: I think she was smarter than all of us put together:laugh:

My MIL had to move out of her house and into an apartment that didn't allow pets, so Maggie now lives with my BIL:( She's already bitten two of his kids, but from what I understand they were teasing her, and of course she misses her Momma:cry:

Scotties are great, but they are terriers to the Nth degree:p They take as much care as our Yorkies do, but in different ways. They need TONS of exercise and challenging games/tricks. I thought I wanted one until I saw a Yorkie, then it was all over:laugh:

Oh God, thanks, you just persuaded me from allowing my hubby to get this dog. THANKS, that is what I heard also, they RUN and run and run off, and if you take them into the park or woods they will just run off and will not come back on command. Then look at the chaos with my little Bandit chasing after him which he will do:mad: :eek:

I LOVE yorkies and I think everyone should have one.. well not everyone.. But that being said, my mom raised and showed scotties while we were growing up. We never had runners. (unless they saw a cat) They were sweet and playful and never bit anyone. BUT they are bigger and stronger and lots sturdier than a yorkie so I would watch one closely with a tiny yorkie.

I had to get a furrbaby after my beloved Buster died. The house was so quiet, and I just couldn't stop crying. Taking care of the new baby, Sam, helped keep me busy. I would tell Sam all the things that Buster and I did together and it REALLY helped.

That is the reason I have started to look each day. Something will come up and even if it takes months, the main thing is I am looking and looking and the right one will hit me when I see it.

We had a West Highland White Terrier and I highly recommend the breed. She was very smart, easy to potty train, great with the kids, and a really sweet girl.

I was just about to mention westie:) my friends have a white one also, so pretty and smart:) not a runner as far as i know., she is a very good dog:)

Its so easy to persuaded peoples . Yorkies are not always perfect dogs .

I herd Scotties were mean.....never had experience w/them. A Schnauzer is resembles them to me and they are VERY smart and easy to train. They are good w/ other dogs and children. My two are big babies and our 5 year old acts like the 3 month old puppy....they play so hard!

Scottish Terriers are extremely intelligent dogs . They get bored easily so peoples are automatically thinking they are means . My friend have 2 and they performs with the superdog's team .

Oh goodness, I guess my post was kind of negative about Scotties, that wasn't my intention. But now that I re-read it, it is very anti-Scottie:( This was just MY experience with ONE Scottie, and I just wanted to share that with you. There are good and bad traits in every breed, and in each individual dog as well. Like I said, I love Maggie tons, she was a lot of fun, very frisky and engaging. She just wasn't right for our family, and thankfully we just had to babysit her, or I'd be insane today:laugh: I'm sure that there are calm and well mannered Scotties, my MIL really didn't do any training with her, who knows if that would have made any difference:confused:
