Live on your own

Is anyone here 18-24 and live on their own already? Can you please say your age and if you live without your parents? I really wanna find my own place but I'm nervous. I only know of one person here...I really need like advice. Thanks

Well I am 24 and will be 25 on Valentines day and I live on my own ( I have since I was 19)..what are your worries and what not?! Its hard but also really rewarding when you sit back and realize how you have done and accomplished the things you did. Also having roommates can have is benefits and hardships too, are you thinking about getting a roommate. I think if its your first time it would be much easier as you can split everything half and half!

When I turned 18 I moved out... My choice.. and about 6 moths later I moved from Florida to Nebraska.
That was quite a few years ago and I Did Great.
But I was Really Ready and Very independent That is a Major must if you move out.

Good luck.

Best thing to do is sit down and work out the pros and cons of it all.

BTW if you get a Room mate. Don't choose a friend! THEY WONT BE FOR LONG IF YOU DO.;)

I moved out when I was 19 to go to college and lived with a roommate until I graduated last year at 23. Now, Im back home living with my parents for a year to try and save up some money. I was stupid and racked up a lot of credit card debt in college though. If it wasn't for that, I'd be on my own now! However, it was easier for me because my parents paid my rent/utilities while I was in school because I wasn't close enough to commute.

I moved out of my parents house when I was 17. Never regretted it. You can do it if you keep on a budget and have a steady job. It takes work but if you have your mind set you can do it. PM me if you want to chat more.

I moved out on my own at 18, its true about not having friends for roommates. My "friend" didnt pay her share of the bills and was doing some not so good things so she had to go. I did find another roommate who was working alot (it was a guy, we were friends and nothing else) and he paid his share of the bills.
You have to make sure that you have a good paying, secure job and that you can handle a budget. If you do get a roommate, make sure you check them out really good before hand. People are crazy these days with drugs and all so just be careful.

I moved out at 18. I'm now 21.

I love it! I could never imagine living at home again. Trust me.. once you move out you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner! :p

ETA: It's also nice because you can live where you wanna live wither it's a different state or city! Just do what you want to do.

My Son has lived on his own since he was 18. He has always had roommates. We are trying to talk him into coming home for a little while though because he doesnt have money for school

I moved out at 18 but the situation was a bit different, I had a child and that made it so much more harder. My sister in law is 22 going on 23 and she lives at home. sometimes she complains about living at home, needing more freedom, less complaining from her mom etc. She is in college now and working. I will give you the same advice I give her...stay at home until you are done with school and get your career started. Living in NYC is expensive! If you are lucky you can find a 1 bedroom apartment for 900 a month, which doesnt include utilities and clothes, food etc. It is NOT easy but can be done. I try to explain to her that the reason why her mom does what she does is because she loves her and worries about her. I just think that if you have your parents help you should take it and finish school. Once thats done then find your place, why add the stress of bills etc to the stress school brings. whatever you choose to do I wish you the best :)

I was 18 when I moved out to attend college and lived on my own til I was 20. I ended up moving back home to take care of mom, b/c she had cancer and then a bunch of bad stuff happened, and I never got to move back out.

Right now I have plans to move out in May when I graduate! :D I love, love, love, love, loved living by myself when I did. I can't wait to do it again. Even though I'm 24, now that i'm living at home, mom "babies" me. Tells me not to go out after dark, fusses at me if I dont go to class, etc.

Well, I'm 19 and I got kicked out of my mom's house back in September like 2 days after I had gotten Lilly. My mom and I didn't really agree on a lot of things and she ended up hitting and kicking on me the night she kicked me out so I refused to go back. I live in an apartment with my boyfriend and Lilly. He works full time and pays our bills and I go to school full time. It's hard but I wouldn't go back for anything, I really like being out on my own and having my own place, it's so much better.

I just turned 25 on the 3rd. I moved out of my mom's when I went to college 3 hours away when I was 18. I lived in the dorm for 2 years but that doesn't really count I don't think. Since then I have lived with my best friend (she lived down the hall from me in the dorm!). In my last year of college, we lived in a 4 bedroom apartment with 2 other girls which we HATED! So we moved into a 2 bedroom condo together in the college town and worked for a law firm. THEN we decided to go to grad school in Texas so we took one of the old roommates with us (thinking that it was the 4th girl that had made that whole situation sour... ). While living in a 3 bedroom apartment in Fort Worth we decided that the 3rd girl was definitely part of the original problem.. LOL! So Courtney and I missed our families and Mississippi, so we FINALLY got it together and moved back home and got a rental house 10 minutes from my mom and about 15 from her mom. Its really the best of both worlds. A few things to remember when moving out on your own... 1) you had better like your job because you cannot just get mad one day and quit, because you will have bills to pay... 2) always be prepared for unplanned expenses, they will happen at the WORST possible time and 3) make sure if you have a roommate that ya'll have similar philosophies on things like paying bills on time (one girl decided that she could pay her part of the cable at the end of the month because they wouldn't cut it off til it was a couple of months late..) and having company over (strange friends pulling the fire alarm @ 3 in the morning will really tick you off).

I moved out at 19 and am 22 now. I'm in southern California, so bills can get pretty high. But it makes you stronger to be on your own. I think the best part for me (that made me stronger) was that my mom refused to help me. She lives up the street from me and makes a GREAT living, but whenever I ask to borrow money, she tells me no and to "figure it out!" Now, I'm 22 and feel like I'm 10 steps ahead than most of my friends that still live at home. I don't think there is anything wrong with living at home, but this was a good path for me to take. I feel good about myself because I've already accomplished so much.

i moved out from my parents and to a different city at the age of 20. best idea i ever had! lol. i love my parents, but i think we (as humans) need the independance to grow as a person into adulthood. im 27 now and have a few friends that still live at home and cannot imagine for the life of me why! you may save some money in rent, but geeze...when i go back home for a week to visit, i cannot wait to get back to my place!! :p

yorkiegirl83 01-16-2008 11:13 AM

I'm 24 and have lived (on my own) with my fiance for 5 years now.

It's a balancing act to be able to budget, save, and completely take care of your own place -- but it's really rewarding and fun to be out there on your own.

I've stumbled and made a LOT of mistakes financially speaking when it comes to judging what I could afford and what I took on, so I would definitely try to really set a realistic budget for what you can afford and still have enough left over to be content and with some set aside also.

I'm doing much better now, but it took me 5 years to figure it out :p
