Wisdom Teeth Extraction
 

After putting it off for ages i finally went to the dentist today, after being in agony for the past couple of months with my lower right wisdom tooth.

The dentist did an X-Ray and discovered my tooth is impacted, so i have to go to hospital to have it cut out :(

I am so scared! have any of you had a wisom tooth extraction whilst under anaesthetic? and how was it? :(

I just did it a couple months ago! I have a post about it somewhere :) I was scared to death! But actually it wasn't that bad...until after! I had all FOUR done at once. I was put out (very first time ever!). The worst part was the pain after. I ended up with dry socket which is VERY painful. Don't know why??? I don't smoke and took all the precautions. But it was very painful.

You'll do fine!!!! I still have holes where they used to be!!! The older you are the longer it takes to heal. My mouth actually still feels funny without those 4 big teeth! I even kept them LOL

I had all four of mine taken out about 8-9 years ago. The bottom two were impacted and the top two grew in normally. I went to a ortho and maxillofacial doctor, who had his own office. At the intial consulation, I was going to get the IV sedative but the day of I didn't want it and just had the gas + novacaine. The top two were easy, he literally just yanked them out. The impacted bottom two he had to cut open the gums and remove it in sections. I couldn't feel the pain, but I could still feel what was going on. I think I even fell asleep at one point. The doctor used the dissolvable stitches, and sent me home with some pain killers which I happily used. The pain killers worked like clock work, after the 6 hours it is supposed to work, SLAM excruciating pain then I had to wait 20 min. until the next one took effect. You can't eat anything solid, your cheeks will look like a chipmunk, and your breath will stink until you are able to brush them again. They recommend that you have someone drive you that day since you will be under some sort of anesthetic. Also my health ins. only covered the impacted teeth. It will take time to get used to the holes gaps in the back of you mouth, it took me about a year or so for the gums to grow in.

It's just something you've got to do if you are starting to have problems, and if you don't its going to screw up your alignment even more.

I had one that was slightly impacted, but didn't have any probs with it. Had the procedure done while I was sleeping. Kept icebags on my cheeks routinely and didn't even swell much. They asked me if I had any questions (after they'd started my IV) and sillly me asked if I could keep my teeth. I remember hours later when I'd come to my sense at home, my dad was like, "Um, here are your teeth that you wanted...?":rolleyes:

Now sis on the other hand...:( Hers had impacted her sinus cavities even. SHe could drink something and then blow her nose and it would come out!:eek: She had to take some heavy antibiotics to keep it from getting infected and could only eat certain foods for a few days. Best I can remember though, it still only took her less than a week to get back to normal, and that was an extreme case.

I have all 4 of mine out, The top ones are the easiest, the bottoms were impacted so they hurt more, take the pain meds and dont smoke or drink thru a straw, make sure you rince your mouth out everyday with warm salt water. i used ice packs to;) good luck, saying a pray for you:)

I had two pulled and two cut out when I was about 17 (quite a while ago). The only problem I had was my horrible reaction to the Vicodin I got sent home with. It's pretty gross to throw up with a mouth full of gauze. Sorry! Other than that, it went fine. Just be sure to follow all the "rules" to avoid dry sockets and you should sail through it. Even if you do follow all those rules though, it can still happen so see the dentist again right away if you start having problems. Good luck!

I had my bottom right out in my twenties. It was impacted sideways, and I had the whole works afterwards - dry socket and infection.

The procedure itself wasn't bad - no gas, just novacaine. Dr removed it in 4 pieces.

Just do EXACTLY what the Dr says afterwards and take your meds. You'll do fine.

All four of mine gone at the same time. Wasnt bad at all. My suggestion for when you come home... Have multiple wash cloths dampened and frozen... fold them long ways and when you come home they will bend to fit your jaw and NO Swelling! :thumbup:

Thanks everyone you have put my mind at ease a little. I guess im lucky that it will only be 1 extraction opposed to some of you who had multiple ones.

So this dry socket? is it when the blood clot thing that covers the wound breaks away?

Im figuring that this will be a great shot for me to quit smoking!! :thumbup:
