I feel helpless Around Thanksgiving a stray showed up at my parents house and well he has never left. We have all grown to love him very much. It's the first thing I look for when I go there. He is just so kind hearted and friendly. He never bothers Baby (moms Yorkie) or Tilly. I think he is just so grateful for food, water, shelter, and love. He likes to hang out at the people that live diagonally from my parents, they are a retired couple and they love him to pieces too. Sometimes he hangs out at the couples house directly across from my parents, they have a larger mix breed dog that this stray has become friends with. He naps on their porch and they feed him and give him water as well. Well a couple of days ago my mom found out that the lady directly across from them is tired of Melvin (the stray at my parents) hanging around their house and is afraid he is going to bite her customers, (she owns a sewing business). So she said she wanted to call the humane shelter on him. My mom and dad threw a fight. They don't even want to think of him being put to sleep. We don't have a no kill shelter around here, or I don't think so at least. Mom stated that THEY were taking care of him and the retired neighbors did as well. Well the retired neighbors are down in Florida and the couple directly across the street are starting to get a little annoying. Okay beyond annoying, they are really ticking me off! My parents were outside building onto their home and overheard the neighbor call for Melvin, yup the same one that doesn't want him around. She was waving food to him. Melvin hung around for a little bit and I guess they were ready for him to go home, so the guy started kicking at Melvin. Why call for a dog, give him food, and expect him not to hang around? DUH! What kind of unintelligent morons are walking this planet?!?!?!?!? Sorry, I'm just extremely ticked beyond belief. My parents don't want to tie Melvin up and can't afford a fence, I'm trying to find a free or inexpensive pen for him. Mom and I are just so upset. How could anyone be this cruel? How confused Melvin must be. He comes when called then gets yelled & kicked at. This dog has already been through a lot. I just wanted a place to vent and YT is the only place I felt comfortable doing that. Can I just hug you guys??? |
What is wrong with some people..what else are they capable of, if they can do this to a defenseless, helpless dog?? Some people just make me sick!! Hope someone can help the poor fella out!! :animal-pa :animal-pa |
Could he maybe live inside and go out on a lead? At least that would buy some more time to figure out a way to get a pen or something and it would protect him from getting kicked anymore or carted off to the shelter. |
That's horrible. Did you call out the guy or report him? Because the dog is a stray, I'm not sure if animal control would do anything about the guy. I hate to say this, but if your parents can't afford a fence or some type of pen, maybe they should give him up to a shelter. Maybe the neighbors who love him would adopt him? I would be worried that he would get hit by a car or that the abusive neighbor would do something to him. While I don't agree with hitting a dog (especially after the neighbor fed the dog), I can understand why the lady wouldn't want a stray dog around her home. |

Sounds like a bad situation. I would be afraid that they are luring Melvin over with food laced with poison. I wish you all the luck in the world. What a noble thing your parents are doing taking in this homeless bundle of love. |
What about one of those zip line-things? I think they offer a lot of space and they probably aren't all that money. I know nothing (nor advocate (in case somone tries to attack me for offering suggestions :)) about keeping dogs outside though. |
Maybe a zip line would be a good idea in this situation. He could be outside during the day and then come in at night and/or during bad weather. It's another alternative that would do until a pen and doghouse could be found. :) |

A zip line is a line that is strung up (kind of like a clothes line) and another line is attached to it in a way that it can move freely up and down that line, then the other end of that line is attached to the dogs collar or harness. That way the doggie can run up and down the line, but can't lose into the street or mean old neighbor's yards where the can get hurt. |

The zip line sounds like a great idea as long as he retains access to food, water, and shade/shelter. Here's something to consider.... is the sewing business run out of their home? Is the home/neighborhood within a area zoned for business???? Use this information for whatever it's worth! Best wishes to the stray. |
If you are looking for an inexpensive pen you might check hoosiertopics.com for local online adds..people selling and wanting things. You can post for free. There might be something on there. I know what you mean about strays. We have gotten a few lately at work and some of my coworkers are not happy about me and others there giving it food and water. The Human Shelter had to come and get one of them. We could not find anyone to take him and he had been there for 2-3 days. The other one we found a home for him. People don't understand that animals have feelings too. |
