I went to the caucuses tonight! And it was interesting, exciting, and actually fun! I have never been at all interested in any type of politics, but for some reason the upcoming election has sparked my interest this time around-maybe it's my age, that I'm aware of the issues our country faces, that I pay more in taxes  or that the media has done a more with involving the candidates in interesting ways, like the YouTube debates. Anyway, it was really cool to see so many people all together, rooting for the same cause, though each had their individual opinions. There were lots of people, standing together, working together, and trying to achieve something. I'm usually not so gung-ho, but this was truly amazing, and gave me a sense of hope, pride, and patriotism. I know that not all of us will have the opportunity to caucus that we have here in Iowa, but I wanted to share my view of it with you all. It was a invigorating, exciting, and interesting experience! |
Ok, I'm nosey....who did you support? I watched those results with great interest myself. |

It's fun, Iowa and the Des Moines area becomes the focus of the country...for like 1 week every four years! It's funny to me how Iowa has been portrayed by the candidates...it seems that everyone thinks it's so rural-which it is in some of the state, but there is a city & metro area in Des Moines. We do have electricity and indoor plumbing, and malls, nice restaurants, and art, people! Give it a chance...I had to when I first moved here! Also, it is NOT the polar ice cap it's been rumored to be...it seems everyone's really exaggerating the weather conditions here-yes, it was cold the past few days, and I feel for the campaign volunteers that have been walking door to door...but it IS January, and that means winter! Get some mittens and a nice warm coat, and you'll be fine! |
I don't really know anything about politics but I was wondering why they have it in that state every year? What is the meaning behind having it there....just courious. |
I just watched the coverage of it on the news - it looks VERY fun. My cousin went and I can't wait to ask him about it! I hope more people come involved - really involved and do their own research. I know that none of us can possibly understand all of the issues, but I'm pretty young (26) and too young to be educating my co-workers (many twice my age) about what's going on in the country! They discuss Dancing with the Stars and Biggest Loser until I want to scream, but none of them know anything about politics. This is too important to just let others decide!! If you're writing up a re-cap for anyone, I'd love for you to PM it to me. What we hear on the news doesn't begin to describe the experience of the people who are there! |

For example, in the last 2 years, we had several different flavors of Mountain Dew here before they caught on across the country-some of the flavors went nationwide, while others were available only for 3 months or so, and haven't been heard of since. Diet Mountain Dew Code Red was available here for 6 months, before stores in Minneapolis had ever heard of it! |
Iowa's caucus also gets alot of attention because historically speaking...the winners of that have been the presidential candidates. Btw, Suzy...I wasn't going to debate your choice in candidates, I was truely just being nosey. But I know how it goes whenever you discuss politics or religion. ;) |

It's definitely more of an event than a chore here-it was really exciting, and there was a definite buzz around town for the last month-and even more so this week and today was just crazy! |

I know :) It's cool-I wasn't worried about you, Miss Nosey ;) but I don't want to start talking politics with anyone else on here-that's another can of worms I'd rather not debate on a yorkie forum. If I want to do that-I'll head to the political forums :p |

Shoot you don't have to head to any political forum to find debates. I visit another forum that isn't political (nor yorkie related)....and man do those conversations get heated during an presidential election year. Generally I've found you are not going to change anyone's mind politically regardless of your argument...I usually just sit back and watch the fur fly. |
I think this is very exciting that you went last night!!! Good for you!!!! Too bad we all could not experience it!!! |
The caucus is such a wonderful process for all of us in Iowa. It also means that it is very easy to meet a candidate in person, shake their hand & bend their ear. It's exciting to see how it all goes - can't wait to see if the rest of America agrees with us in Iowa. Part of the reason Iowa is first is because it is a smaller state & allows the candidates to spend less money & also go out an meet the voters. If the process started in NY or Calif. only the richest candidates would stand a chance. I for one do not care about having a multi-millionaire representing me in the White House. Or one who may already be in debt to so many huge questionable donors who want favors in return. I think the process of Iowa & then NH works well - as we are 2 very different states, then they are off to SC where the south will be represented. Want to learn more about the caucus on a more local level? Read the states big newspaper The Des Moines Register - here's the site www.desmoinesregister.com - there is so much on there - tons of video & pix - lots submitted by readers & all kinds of first hand accts of the election process. Lots of Blogs too. One of the local tv stations went to a caucus & late last night they were still working it out, so it was fun to watch it on tv too! Boy, I sound like a real politically junkie - which I'm not, but it is fun to be a part of the excitement. There were so many people like Suzy who went to the caucus for the 1st time. My daughter who is 18 was so excited to go & be a part of the process. It's more fun then casting a simple vote on voting day, but there were headaches - cold weather, lack of parking at caucus sites, over-crowded rooms & time constraints |
Me and my husband went to the caucuses last night we had to park at least a mile away ,and we didnt make it in time we were turned away ,I remember in 2004 it was not anywhere like it was last night we caucused in 2004 and it was a small turn out but last night fighting the crowds to get to the school was horriable and then get turned away because we didnt make it by 7:00 and then having to walk back to the car i was disappointed . :thumbdown |
I'm confused by the whole thing. Why does Iowa have so much power? Why do ya'll get to choose the main candidate for the rest of the USA? See... I am confused. LOL....:p |
