Sponsoring Children.
 
Has anyone ever seen those commercials asking to sponsor a child? You donate less than a dollar a day or something like that. I really really want to do this, but I want to try to find an organization that I trust and I know my money is going to help a child.

I found this site. http://www.planusa.org/ I'm not sure if most of my money would be going to help a child. Does anyone else do this?:)

That's so nice you want to reach out to help a child in need, but you do have to be careful where you donate, some of the charities use so much of the money paying themselves and using it for administrative fees that very little is going to the actual cause..... this link might help you.....

Why not try to help a child right here in the U.S? We were foster parents for many years and, believe me, there are plenty of kids/families that need help right here at home.

Tracy I totally agree. I just sent for volunteer information from the Children's Home Society of FL. They have a shelter in my county for abused and abandoned children and got super ratings with charity navigator. Here's the volunteer link if you're interested since we live in the same state.;) http://www.chsfl.org/volunteer.php

I wanted to help US child too. I just didn't know where to start. I'm probably going to volunteer and become a big sister soon!! I can't wait.:D

Just wanted to say that I think that is an awesome thing to do!!! :D Please keep us posted on how that goes! I would love to hear about it. :)

As much as I hate to say it, because a good deed is a good deed, I feel a lot of the reason people (not anyone here) donate to children in foriegn countries and adopt them is it's the in vogue thing to do. I.e. all the celebs are doing it.

I also believe in volunteering to help children(rather than sending off money and not knowing if it goes to help where they say it will). I'm a reading mentor and go once a week to help a child with his reading skills.

The other day my sil told me her neighbor is in the military and had a bunch of Toys For Tots toys. He let my niece come over and choose a few as well as his daughter :mad: This makes me so mad, neither children are in need! Those toys are for the kids who aren't as fortunate. If he has extras he should donate them to hospitals or other places ...but to pick and choose from them is ridiculous.

Think about it, would you give to Toys For Tots if you knew the person handling them was giving them out as gifts to people they knew?????

I was a mentor to a little girl for over a year and I loved it. There are very few things in life that are that rewarding. :) Good luck!

Wow, that is awful:( I think that volunteering is extremely valuable and makes a huge difference in people's lives:love: Money and material goods are good, but just that extra human contact for a disadvantaged person, you can't buy that;)
