? Why Dont Appliances Last Awhile. Terrible time I am having since I replaced my washer, the new one was so defective, Kitchen Aide replaced it (same model) it isn't even one year later and now it won't spin, never has really drained properly either. This one has all the bells and whistles ( you know all the good stuff the sales people tend to tell us we need ) well, I have in the past managed to somehow get it to work, but tonight I gave up. I disconnected all the hoses and pulled the machine out of the garage and told Jack I am going to put it in the yard and use it as a planter :D this was the top of the line so I was told  Tomorrow morning I am going to Sears and get the cheapest thing going, without all the bells and whistles, I already did my research on the internet and phoned them to see if the one I decided on is in stock :) I just can't understand why appliances don't last like they use to. |
I agree with you. When my husband and I got married we could only afford used appliances. We found a used older model dryer for $20 and a newer washer for $100. The washer went out within a year and that old dryer is still going. When we went to Sears they tried to sell us a washer that did stuff I could care less about. The more on the appliance, the more can break. That's what my dad always says. |
I can diagnose what's wrong with your Kitchen aide...it's a belt. That's what makes it spin and drain the water out. It also probably needed adjusting when you were having just the poor drain problem. Do you know anyone handy? My husband and both my brothers have replaced the belts on washers...so maybe you could find someone to fix yours for you. OR go buy a new one....I lean towards that myself alot of times. LOL. I haven't had big problems with large appliances...but man...my first microwave lasted 10 years....my last THREE....obviously not. And new costs less than repairing them...so one dies...I just start over. |

Now that I have it pulled out I will take the back off and check the belt. This machine isn't even a year old :( Thanks. |

I would think it would still be under warranty.... |

planned obsolescence. But one year is ridiculous for a high price item like that. I have the Maytag Neptune (front loading washer with dryer on top). So far so good, but it has only been 2½ years. But check and see if you are covered by the warranty. They will get you for parts though. |
Patti doesn't it still have a warranty??? |
I have a method when buying things... I go as simple as possible. The more gadgets they have there more parts there are to break or stop working! :) I'm sorry that this happened to you though... especially now! The holidays are a tough time for things to let go! |
We have insurance on our appliances just for that reason. Atleast when are's break down we only have to pay a 35 service call, and they pay for all the labor and parts. If it's unrepairable they get us a new one. I really would recommend this insurance. |
My parents have had the same appliances for YEARS...I mean...YEARS.....we're talking over 15-20 years (except they did upgrade their refrig).....and they are all working good. We, on the other hand, have had a refrig for 7 years and it is about to expire. But a new washer (Kenmore) and the day after it was put in, it had to be serviced. (arugh) I think the newer ones aren't made as good as some of the older ones......hmmmm...do you think they do that on purpose?? So we will have to spend more money??!!! :( |
That's funny...but my problem is that my appliances last too long!! I am dying for my washer and dryer to break down, I've had them for 15 years and it would be a sin to throw them out simply because they are old. They work great, but, I really want the new washer, dryer I've seen in sears. The ones that are tall and front loaders, come in bold colors, etc.... My Refrigerator is also 15 years old and works great, but I want the new stainless model. I moved into my house 15 years ago and bought all new appliances at that time. |

Yes, what Monday said. It is called planned obsolescence. That is why appliances from 20 or 30 years ago work lots better. You can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence |
I do know that white westinghouse appliances has a very bad reputations and I also found out that the Kenmore washers have the same parts.:( I have a Maytag washer and Kenmore dryer. I don\'t mind that they don\'t match exactly as long as they last a long time. Got them Aug. 01 and so far so good. We bought a new Hoover wind tunnel vacuum a few months ago and that thing was such a lemon. We sat in on the curb and put a FREE sign on it and bought a Kenmore Progressive Direct Drive. I LOVE it. It was the Consumers Report Best Buy. I always looking in the CR before making any major purchases. So far so good. |
