Anyone here work with the school district? At elementary, middle school or high school levels? In the office, library or as a T.A...? What are the good and the bad things about having this type of job.. also What happens as far as pay goes during the winter , spring and summer breaks? Do you get Unemployment , paid leave or no pay? I'm thinking of applying for a school district job to see if I like the atmosphere just wanted other's opinions! Thanks:) |

Well I worked for the school district in Texas for over 15 years. I LOVED it. I worked as a sub, as a TA, in the library and in the office. I did it at the elementary and middle school level. I got paid monthly year round, got the same vacation days as my kids, got the summers off and still got the pay check every month. I say go for it....any questions, feel free to PM me. Patty |
Hopefully Twalla will see this I think she works in the education field. |

I have summers off, Christmas break and spring break with my kids. I get paid year around so that part is nice. The pay isn't much working for the school district...but then, everyone complains about their pay. We only get paid once a month and with our last pay raise, I think I got around $20-25 dollars extra a month. We're allowed 7 days off during the school year with pay and 3 days are docked at half rate. The atmosphere basically depends on your boss. A group is only as great as it's leader. If your boss is into gossip, you can rest assured that there will be lots of back-stabbing going on. If your boss doesn't put up with it, then that would be an ideal working environment. I've always loved my job until this year. I seriously think that my boss is going through menopause and has been quite difficult to work with. Because of this, I don't think I'll be going back next year but I haven't made up my mind yet...after all, they could move principals around.:D Anyway, as always, JMO. Oh, forgot to add that I started out at the high school level but work at an elementary school now. |
I work at an Elementary school in the office handling attendance and enrollment. I like that I only work 187 years a year, but get a check every month.......so yes, my pay is less but when you calculate the pay to an hourly rate it is not terrible. And being off a week at Thanksgiving, two plus weeks at Christmas, a week at Spring Break and then all summer.....well that part is great! We are not eligible for unemployment during those breaks. We get 10 days paid sick days to use each year for sick or personal business. My mom worked for the school district for 17 years until leaving this year to work for a software company. She started at the elementary campus and then moved up the various schools as me & my brother went through school.....ending up at the high school before moving to the district office and working year around. There is politics in schools and districts....but there is anywhere. The campus principal - as mentioned by TxShopper - does often set the tone for the campus.....as does the superintendent at the district level. You do pay into Teacher Retirement and schools have good insurance programs.....so the benifits are good....maybe a little costly, but at least stable and dependable! I am not sure what I will do at the end of this year.....I have graduated now and may elect to go into something using my degree.....but I sure hate to give up all the time off! |
I'm the office manager of an elementary school have been at my school 19 years.....I'm an 11 mth employee and have 3 weeks off in December/Jan, 1 Week for Spring Break, 1 Week for Fall Break, All summer (but I'm always setting up for the new school year) and per our union get 16 paid vacations days per year (depends on how many years you've been with the district) and our sick/emergency personal days accumulate each year. The benefits are really good for those who work full time, but not so good for the paraprofessionals who only work 3 3/4 hrs per day...they get no benefits...just sick/vac days. I'm on salary so I get paid twice a month...(not even my principal gets that..hehehehe) My pay rate isn't bad either.....but I am up their in the steps of payrate that our district/union contracts sets.... I love working for the school district....and my retirement plans aren't too shabby either.... |
I should also add...we don't get paid for time off, but can take vacation days which need to be used up each year.... |

I worked for our local school district for 8 years. If you have children in school, it can be the very best job to have, as your schedules will be close to the same. I was paid my 9 months salary over a 12 month period and did have 10 sick days, 3 personal, even though I was part time. The very best part about working for the school - you fall in love with some of the kids. And, it helps to keep you young at heart. The very worst part about working for the school - you fall in love with some of the kids. And their situations will break your heart! |
