http://newsok.com/article/3175893 EUFAULA — A woman was killed and her infant and a state trooper were seriously injured in an early-morning wreck Friday near Eufaula. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, trooper Justin Williams was responding to an injury accident when the trooper himself was involved in a fatal crash about 6:40 a.m. "It was a horrible accident, and our hearts are broken that it happened,” said trooper Betsy Randolph by phone from a Tulsa hospital where Williams and the infant were being treated. Both were taken from the accident scene by helicopter to Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. The driver, who is believed to be the child's mother, was killed in the crash. The woman apparently pulled out from a convenience store on State Highway 9 about a mile-and-a-half east of Eufaula, into the path of the trooper's car. A Stigler funeral home identified the woman as Tiffany Brown, 24, of Porum, but as of 7 p.m. Friday, troopers hadn't released her name. Patrol is ‘not sure why it happened' Williams was using his emergency lights and sirens at the time of the accident, and troopers aren't sure why the woman didn't see the approaching patrol car, Randolph said. "We still don't know if it was because it was still dark or there was something obstructing her view,” Randolph said. "We're not sure why it happened.” The child, a 9-month-old girl, suffered a broken leg and minor cuts and bruises in the wreck, Randolph said. The baby's aunt arrived at the hospital Friday afternoon to watch over her. "She was holding her in her arms and cooing at her when I saw them,” Randolph said. The girl was strapped into a car seat, which apparently was knocked loose in the wreck and landed on the floor, Randolph said. Williams suffered facial fractures, head injuries and a foot fracture. Doctors were monitoring his condition in the hospital's intensive care unit, Randolph said. "The department as a whole has been hurt by this,” Randolph said. "Our hearts go out not just because a trooper was injured but because he is emotionally distraught right now. He's thinking about that woman and her family like I'm sure we all are.” |
