Welcome to yt...and congratulations on your new baby. Patience is the number one thing you are going to need. I know lots of people crate train but I never did. Just learn his signs that he needs to go and take him outside and praise him. |
Welcome to YT. You're going to have to be patient with her. She's in a new environment and has to get use to it. Do you know anything about her background that you can share with us? We might be able to help you out more that way. Potty training is a matter of consistency & patience. |

Welcome to yorkie talk:wavey: |
Welcome and congrats!!! Well, I dont have experience with a dog that old. I would assume that any animal is trainable with patience and persistance. Do you know how she was using the bathroom prior? If she was taken outside, than you need to create a schedule (around her eating/drinking) so that you can help her training. A dog has to use it within 45 min to an 1 hr after eating and drinking varies. Not sure of your schedule, but find something that will work for you both. If you cant take her out, then I would do the potty pads... Hope this helps and again welcome :D |
congratulations on your new pup ... good luck with the house training, what was she doing for 6 years??? welcome to YT |
Congratulations! I adopted Lady at 4&1/2. Although they are older, rescues need to be treated like puppies in many ways. Almost all of them have to go back to Potty Training 101. Treat her just as you would if she were just a puppy. Feed her and take her out on a schedule and praise her like crazy when she goes potty. Make sure you take her out after she eats, wakes up from a nap, etc. Unless you can watch her with 100% of your attention, keep her confined in an xpen. Many people have great success potty training rescues by leashing them to themselves so they can be sure to watch them. The key is to make sure she potties where she is supposed to because every time she has an accident, it will just make it that much harder. If she does have an accident, make sure you use an enzyme cleaner like Natures Miracle to get the whole stain out or she will be attracted back there. Rescues require a lot of patience, but it will be rewarded by incredible love and devotion. This is an excellent book for anyone who adopts an adult dog. It will also help you with other issues that can come up with a dog who has been rehomed. ![]() |
