Migraines anyone? So I'm home early from work (I work nights as a mother-baby RN), and I can't sleep (of course)... Anyway, I'm home because my hubby spent the evening in the ER , he had a headache all day Sunday, with vomiting, dizziness. It came on really fast, is this how migraines usually are? :( They did a CT, and his head looks ok, so doc says it's a migraine, and he came home with a prescription for MIDRIN... Anyone use this? He is pretty knocked out now. Just wanna hear how you manage your migraines, and how long this might last... |
Aww I'm sorry about your Hubby, hopes he feels better soon! You must be exhausted as well! I work in urgent care and we get a lot of patients who have migraines and they look like they are in SOOO much pain, and we usually give them Ketorolac (Toradol) for it and it seems to help, I haven't heard of Midrin, so im not sure about that.. But I've had migraines myself in the past, and it is just the worst pain ever, feels like your head is just AHHHH, it's a painful thing it just comes and sometimes it just stays there (well for me at least).. this was long time ago.. I get really bad headaches, but they aren't migraines, mine last all day long and sometimes when i wake up.. i think mine is pregnancy related but who knows :p But I hope your hubby feels better soon!! and you should get some rest as well! |
Oh my goodness! My heart goes out to your husband. I have suffered from migraines since I was eleven. Mine are known as "menstral migraines" and I have at least one a month. For me, they last from 3 to 5 days. Did you husband notice seeing any kind of aura or disturbance in his vision? For some people, but not all, that is a precurser to a migraine attack. To me it sounds like he had a classic migraine or possibly even a cluster headache. Was the pain located on one side or area of his head? Mine always occur right near my right brow bone and eyebrow. Small area for so much pain. I have tried almost everything for mine, from prescriptions and over the counter to home/holistic remedies. Right now I'm on Relpax and it does pretty well if I can take it at the very beginning of an attack. I pray that this will be a rare occurance for your husband. Alot of people think,"Ahh...its just a headache." Let me assure you,its anything but just a headache. Blessings to you and yours, Angie |
My daughter was on midrin since junior high. The part of being knocked out is the blessing of the med. If you can sleep your not hurting I always say. After years of these she finally went to narcotics for her head pain, nothing seems to work for her. Migraine meds only make her heart race. Best of luck to your husband. It is helpless to watch. |
I don't know if mine are migraines but I do get TERRIBLE headache their sinus related i believe. and every morning i wake up with one. there are days when having lights, tv or radio on bothers me. I take my claritin in the morning and after a few hours it goes away. I hope he feels better |
I have pretty bad migraines, and I get the Botox injections to treat them. Best thing EVER! They last for 3 months and when the injections start to wear off, then you start to feel it. I also have Midrin for any emergencies that may arrise. It does tend to knock me out as well. But, all in all it is a good med. But yes, they can come on out of no where. Or they can creep up on you. Amy81~ I would see a ENT (ear, nose and thorat) doc or an allergist. They may need to drain your sinuses, or give you a different treatment. Especially since you have them everyday. |
I have had to deal with migraines for several years now. I sometimes get them frequently and other times only on an occasion. Usually it only lasts a day with medicine but I have gone a whole week with a migraine which is just torture. I have tried several of the medicines out for them including Midrin and Relpax. Relpax does nothing for me, the midrin helps some but not always. The one that has helped me the most is Imitrex. I have been on it for several years and it is the only one so far that has helped me. Of course a lot of times it knocks me out but atleast the pain is gone, lol. Good luck with your husband's migraines, they aren't fun. Amy, I always use to get awful headaches that were sinus related, my whole face would hurt especially around the sinus areas. They eventually got to the point to where they were getting worse and my allergy medicine wasn't helping at all. So after talking with a doctor, I decided to have surgery on the sinus area, I can't remember what the surgery is called but it is very common. It was the best thing I ever did, I feel a ton better and rarely get headaches from my sinuses anymore. I am so glad I got it done. |
I had ONE migrain in my life..after my friends baby's funeral...it was soooooooooo painful I thought I would die!! I never want another one in my life..I would have given anything to have been "knocked" out that day!! Hopefully this isnt going to be a re-occuring thing for him..my aunt lives with migrains often and its terrible for her.. Dawn |
I am tellin ya'll...BOTOX! :D It has done wonders for me! :p |

Jenn, please express my sympathy to your dh. It is a horrible situation to be in. |
I have had migraines since puberty, although much less frequently now, maybe 2 a year. They are absolutely awful. I am out of commission if I get one because I can't do anything but be in a dark room. I get the dizziness, vomiting, the whole deal. I tried Midrin, Imitrex, I even did a clinical trial for Relpax (didn't work). Midrin and Imitrex work if I took it immediately, but wasn't always really sure they were migraines until they were full blown. My miracle drug is: BC Headache powders. I know, I know! It sounds weird that an over the counter helps more than anything, but it's true for me. I keep them with me always..my purse, my desk drawer at work..etc. Anytime I feel a headache starting on one side of my head I take it, so I really think I have headed off migraines this way. It is the only way to explain the drastic reduction in the number of these headaches I get. I hope these don't become a problem for your husband. Could it be stress induced? Mine usually happen AFTER a stressful event is over. |
We thought my daughter had migranes, but nothing would work, so the doctor recommended we go to the dentist. She had to have all four of her widsom teeth pulled, and thank God the headaches went away. |

I get about 3 over each eye brow, two on each side of my head in the temple area of the scalp, and 4 in my neck and shoulder area. Then the last two at the base of my skull. They don't go very deep. I think insurance pays for it if it is really bad, mine does (tricare). But for them, it is cheaper to pay for 2 viles (sp?) of the botox than a months supply of my main migraine meds. |
I've been getting some really bad headaches more frequently then in the past. I'm guessing stress related but they are doozies. Not your typical headache. For me I need to just lay in the quiet and sort of just take my mind into itself and block everything out. When it's really severe I use an ice pack. I put it on my head until the pain is just sooooooo unbearable and then take it off. I do this off and on a few times and then just totally relax. The pain for the cold just kind of shocks it for me and they go away. But try and hold out for as long as possible before your remove the cold. Sending good vibes to hubby. |
I have had severe migraines since college,so...over 30 years. I now take zomig which is non drosy. When I feel1 coming on I try to go in a quiet room & lie down after I take a pill b4 the nauses & all the other symptoms compound.I used to be on imitrex that wrked like a charm, but I have high blood pressure so my doctor switched me, I hope your hubby only has random migraines, not chronic like me. |
I was diagnosed with migraines when I was 14. I've been through meds after meds after meds and nothing has helped. I have been allergic to most of the meds I have been given, so I've just given up trying to take medicine. When I get them I usually try to go and lay in a dark cold room. That helps me go to sleep and it helps it alittle. Normally I have migraines that last up to a week. It sucks. |

I started suffering from migraines after my twins were born 26 years ago and at times I just wanted to die. I tried everything, injections, pills even had to go to the ER a several times for a shot of darvon nothing helped until about 6 years ago when my doctor suggested I try Zomig and what a blessing it is for me. I take a half a pill and lay down and 20 to 30 minutes I feel like a new person. There have been a few times it didn't help and I had to take a sudafed with it to get relief. For some reason sometimes my migraines also cause my sinuses to flare up. |
pain I do not have this problem, but my daughter does from time to time...I just want to said after reading this thread..God bless all of you..I pray each day for all who suffer in any way... |
I suffer from them and I found imetrix (sp?) works really good. Hopefully this is a one time thing for your hubby though, I wouldn't wish migraines on anyone! |

I've been getting migraines since puberty as well. Since going on BC pills the frequency of my migraines has lessened. I used to get them for the whole week before my period. It was a severe pain that never went away no matter what i took. Lights bothered me A LOT. I would just sit in my room in the dark when i got home so as to not aggravate them more. now i don't have them every month like before, but every couple. And the pain isn't as severe. Its more like a dull annoying pain that won't go away. Lights still bother me tho during this time. |
I started getting migraines when I was 9. For years, I didn't know what they were. I'd feel awful enough that I wanted to die, just go home and bury my head underneath the covers and sleep it off. Sometimes they lasted for days. I was finally diagnosed with them when I was 19. After being taken to the ER and getting a shot of Demerol, my doctor prescribed me Imatrex. 50MG and it'd knock them out a half hour after I took one. If it didn't (I never had this happen), I could take another. And I tell you, it was a godsend! A few years back, I started seeing a new chiropractor. About 6 months after I started seeing him, my migraines disappeared. I occasionally get a tinge of one every once in awhile but nothing like I did. So I recommend a chiropractor and if he can't work the magic, try Imatrex or another one of the meds out there. I don't know why anyone would sit back and suffer when there's stuff out there to help. I wish I'd known sooner. |
Thank you to everyone....I had no idea migraines were so common. :thankyou2 I used to have one a year as a teen and young adult, but once I started having kids they stopped... wierd. I'm sorry some of you really suffer with them and I hope that Hubby will not start into a recurring pattern. :( :big_hug: |
Until recently I have had recurring severe monthly headaches since my early 20s. I thought they were related to the time of the month and The Pill. I could go to bed fine and wake up in the middle of the night with a pounding headache. It felt like a really bad hangover. I always felt tired and couldn't sleep enough. Sometimes light bothered me too. Everytime I moved my eyes it seemed like I could feel every tendon and muscle in my eye sockets throbbing. Most of my headaches were always the front quarter of my head, from my eyes back to my temples and up to the top of my head. My fix was lots of Excedrin and a cold frappucino. The headaches became more frequent and could happen at any time. Then my OB doc mentioned that my blood pressure was borderline. Much later I went to have kidney stones removed and was having the motherload of headaches (probably from the stress). The nurse told me my blood pressure was 160/98 and asked me if I had high blood pressure. I mentioned I had a really bad headache and was told that was one of the symptoms of high blood pressure. Since the kidney stone incident I drink tons of water and really watch my salt intake because of the BP. I also stopped The Pill. Since then I have hardly had a headache....maybe one every four months and nothing like the zingers I had been getting. I really feel for your husband. I hope he can find a treatment that works for him. |

Well, I have had them for so long, I can't remember. Not as long as some ladies on here though, I would say 15 years? Mine are typically tension headaches in the beginning and progress to a full blown, can't move migraine. My neurologist started me on them about a year ago. I can't imagine my life without it! They do the injections in all of the major migraine areas, plus in my shoulders and neck, right at the base of my skull. I use 2 voles for my treatment (I also have a nervous tic that is treated with Botox). I noticed immediate relief! It lasts typically about 3 months, and you may be a little red/swollen in the areas that they inject, it hurts a little...but I always tell my doc that it is less pain than a migraine! :p As the botox gets to the end of the 3 months I feel a little headache here or there and I know I have to get in and be re-done soon! I also keep Midrin on hand for just-in cases, and with the botox, even a tylenol will knock out the inklings of a headache. I would say, if you are being covered by insurance on it, then go for it! It is much better than having to treat a migraine, think of it as a preventative. If you can do it, I am 100% a supporter of it! Also, on the up side of it.. if you have a good doc and a little extra botox...he may do the beauty ones for you too, since the vole is already paid for! ;) Mine does...hehe. Oh, and the voles are typically about $500 each. Hope that helps you out. If you want to know anything more specific, feel free to PM me. |
We should all start a migraine club! I'm so happy (not for any one) that I have people I can talk to about migraines, and you guys know what I'm talking about! I ENVY people who can take tylonel for a headache. I'm lucky if excedrin works! I've had them since I was 15 and have tried so many different things for them, and nothing works. At one point I was getting them numerous times a week...and the insurance won't cover all the Imatrex that I needed :( The day I'm cured of migraines I will definitly be celebrating...hopefully that day will be soon! One thing I wanted to mention though was accupuncture, I was doing that for awhile and it did seem to help, I'm working on trying to find something else though because I don't really care for the needles, and it can get , and didn't cure them completely. Right now I'm trying to find a comfortable pillow to sleep on, because now it seems no matter where/how I sleep, I wake up w/ a sore neck, which eventually leads to a migraine later in the day. Before I was on Seasonal (a pill where you only get your period 3x year) and I was getting them almost every day..once I quit that they calmed down..but now I think it's getting back up there :( |
