Wanted to share some exciting news!! So i'm in Teacher's College and in April there are two weeks where we aren't in class. The first week we are to be out in the community expereincing different types of teaching (ie.. i'm a highschool teacher but i could go observe an elementary school, preschool, schooling in a hospital) OR... get this... go to the Dominican Republic and do service learning. For those of you that don't know service learning is helping out while learning... so i will be going to an orphanage in Monte Cristi Dominican Republic and teaching the students there to speak English!!!! If you are interested in looking here is the website. www.orphanage-outreach.org I was fortunate enough to do a similar expereince in Grade 10 in Mexico. We had to apply and luckily only 30 applied (only 35 can go!) I am just SO excited (mind you when the time comes to leave i'm going to be a mess having to leave my Layla... more on that in the new year :p ) Ok thanks for listening! |
I'm so proud of you! I always wanted to do the Peace Corps. Maybe I still will after I retire. Way to go! :D |
That is such exciting news and I can tell by your post how happy you are.....boy you are going to be a basket case when you have to leave Layla....are your parents going to watch her? Too bad you aren't that close to me....I could watch her for ya. :D Izzy would love a pal to chase around besides the kitty cat peeps. |

Sounds like a fantastic experience! Congratulations!:cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :cheer: :excited: :excited: :excited: |
what a great experience for you surely. What subject do you teach? I was a high school algebra and calc teacher before I decided to teach elementary kids ... It is such a noble profession ... after your week or 2 there in the DR, will there be another teacher coming in? I was there also. North Shore, Puerto Plata ... Language proficiency increases the more time spent on it. I have had children from many various countries come and in 6 months they learn the language. Their brains are like sponges, it is so rewarding ... to watch them blossom. |
congratulations ... have a safe trip ... enjoy the experience if a lifetime ... |
oh, i am so happy for you!!!!!!!!! |
