Atkins or South Beach? Can we discuss diets here or not? Will give it a try. Has anyone done Atkins? i used to do it then went off the wagon, then jumped back on, then lost it again, and and and. Now Xmas is nearing and thanksgiving and I have 10lbs too much:( :( ......how can I really get back on and stick to it? I feel so badly that I allowed myself to gain this much weight over the summer:mad: |
I lost 40 lbs last year on South Beach and really enjoyed the food I ate while I was following it....I was still tryin to lose about 15 lbs but gained another 10 during my honeymoon in May so I have about 25 lbs that I currently want to lose and I am thinking I might start back up with the South Beach... I have not been on Atkins...so I have no experience nor adivce on this current diet...but BEST of luck if you get back on it!!! |

I just get bored with the atkins induction, but seeing I have let me recalculate it is 8 and a quarter lbs to loose. But my problem is sticking to losing. Just last month Iwas my ideal weight and I just started back to eat all my husband's meals as they are not low carb:mad: . he gets the nice stuff and I eat the low carb stuff which I am pretty much fed up of. |
I do weight watchers. I am starting after the Holidays. I couldnt do those diets that are restrictive of what you can eat. Weight watchers you can eat almost anything just less of it |
I need to do something!!! Atkins has worked for me in the past!!! |
Oh, I forgot to tell you....there is a great Atkins forum on the web. (you might already know this) You can google it. |
I do atkins but i'm going through a boredom problem as well. I need some new ideas for foods. I've lost 60 pounds. |
WOW!! Adkins takes a lot of will power to stick to... Just dont stay on too long because it is bad for you:( Shot term it's a great diet:D |
I've been low carbing more than a year... i'm well. My husband is diabetic and he low carbs, he has to, to be well.:) SO many people low carb and are very healthy. Atkins is only very strict for the beginning part. The remainder of the diet, in my opinion, is comletely fine. |
My step dad ended up having a stroke in his eye while on the atkins diet. The Dr and Other dr's told him that eating all those Green foods and no carbs causes your blood to clot. I hope anyone is on this diet reads all information on it. |
I am a nurse and have some education in nutrition. I personally do not believe in any diet that severely restricts any one food or food group, unless of course it is junk food. Our brains need complex carbs to function. Personally, I found South Beach to be the most balanced and the easiest to stick with. I did not do the first part of the plan which I found too restrictive. |
I actually eat a good amount of carbs. The first two weeks of atkins is very restrictive. AFter that you add in more carbs until you are losing at a comfortable level (for me i like to lose at 2 pound per week rate). When you hit your weight goal that you want to maintain, you add in even more carbs. Lots of people that do atkins make the mistake by doing the 2 week induction diet, indefinately. That's not what is supposed to happen. I've read of people on some of the low carb forums that eat only meat and eggs ONLY for months, now THAT is riduculous! And not the atkins diet. I'm being a little lenient lately even though i haven't reached my goal yet because i just feel like it and i've been exercising more. SO today I had some oatmeal. I'm making bean and veggie soup tomorrow for dinner. It's still so much more low carb than i used to eat. And when i do eat carbs, I only eat high fiber foods. I really don't think it's unhealthy if you are doing it the right way. |
I heard the South Beach diet is really good. I know ppl that did the Atkins one but gained the weight back cause as soon as you eat carbs again it all comes back |
good luck ... I have had no experience with these diets ... I am very active ... |
Well I've tried the south beach diet a few times to lose a quick 10 lbs and I'd definitely suggest it but to keep the results you have to stick with it. I never stuck with it and gained all the weight that I lost back. You'll see results fast in the first two weeks since you're body is pretty much in detox ...you can lose up to 15 lbs (can't eat ANY carbs or sugar not even fruit since it has natural sugars). So you lose a lot of lbs in the hips and belly region. It's really hard and you have to be VERY disciplined the first two weeks (the hardest phase)! Also you have to love eating grilled chicken, salad, and eggs pretty much everyday :) If you're planning on doing a quick diet thing I wouldn't do it but if you're looking for a lifestyle change ... go for it the results are def. worth it :) good luck! |
I have also heard unhealthy things about the Atkins diet. Just please diet safely. :) |
We did the Adkins, now doing 1200 calories Hubby and I did the Adkins diet 2.5 years ago.....from what I read in the Adkins book, you are supposed to stay on "induction" until you get close to your desired weight....which for us meant well over 6-9 months....which means low, low carbs. When you do get to your desired weight, we did not, you are supposed to slowly add carbs back in until you find your threshold, where you dont gain or lose on that amount of carbs. Well, unfortunately, we added back the carbs like normal people do....and you guessed it...WE GAINED IT ALL BACK. and then some.....and what is more weird about this diet is......we gained in strange places, not where I usually gained...... Also, Adkins caused my kidney stones, as my Urologist explained...something about the uric acid forming crystals and developing into stones......and I also know people with gall stones after Adkins..... We have been on 1200 calorie diet since Aug 1, I have lost 40 and hubby has lost 65 lbs. IT is taking watching and ruling out bad foods.....I do pay attention to carbs, fat, grains, fruits and vegs. I have just started exercising this week.....so up to this point, I have not exercised one bit. I have found and learned this from Biggest Loser.com, that when you get on a plateau......just do a carb load and then a carb dump....that should shock your system to lose again......but then you have to right back on the 1200 calorie.... And it really is not to bad......I eat right, just not a lot of it....:) Shirley |

Atkins and low carbing generall has been proven the best way to eat for me, only thing is I love foods that have high carbs in it for example pastas etc, so while I have stayed off them for several years, recently I am pinching here and there and those pinches cause the inches LOL |

What is the link? I am on one of them but there are several |

Great, while atkins allow such lovely meals, I just get bored with the induction. The OWL and maintenance is great which I have managed for almost a year and then boom I went to eating crap:thumbdown |

its bad if you only eat junk and process foods. I do not, I eat only wholesome fresh foods and will not eat some of the processed cold cuts they speak of, I rather do the make from scratch. |

I totally agree, Atkins is not unhealthy, it is by far the best diet you can be on once you pass the Induction stage, that part if the only part that is not all that healthy but nobody should remain there more than 6 weeks I hope. |

He must have had prior problems, because what green stuff you speak of veges? They are all healthy and beneficial and they do contain carbs the good carbs |

If you look at a nutrition chart, you will see that on the OWL and Maintenance of Atkins that is exactly what they allow, but like everything, in moderation. and the WHO, the World health organization also agrees that 50 carbs is essential for a healthy body, when I was on the mainteannce I took in a little over 50 and still have bursts of energy, now I am well over 100 and feel bad and have little energy. If I am not eating the bad carbs I am eating in general the following Fruits, plenty of veges, salads, eggs, cheese, yoghurt, cottage cheese, all meats, lots of high fiber grains and crisp bread, sardines, avocadoes, so that is about what my intake is. I do not do sugars at all and neither do I do junk food. I will gain my weight from eating home cooked meals such as pastas, rice dishes that are accompanied by lots of protein, so it is obvious the high carb and proteins is a big no no for me. Otherwise, if I stopped eating anything high carb as mentioned then I maintain my weight with no problems. I just been eating a lot of the rice and pasta dishes and some potato |
