what breed of dog to get? my husband wants a dog of his own, but since my Pixie doesn't really seem to like him very much, he wants to get another breed of dog altogether. he says he doesn't even want to take a chance on another Yorkie, and i understand that. to help y'all, he would like a small dog, preferably one that's very affectionate and would work well as a lap dog. basically, he'd like a dog to lay beside him on the couch or bed while he's watching TV and be a companion. any ideas on breeds? |
Maltese are great lap dogs and super cute too. Whenever I get my next dog that is what I am going to get |

What about a long haired chihuahua? My husband has one and she is most definitely HIS girl. |

we were at a "puppy market" or whatever you call those gatherings outside of target or walmart where people bring their puppies, and he was melting for a shih tzu so that may work too. i know nothing about those dogs though, so does anybody here have knowledge on shih tzu's? |
Not all yorkies or maltese favor females. female yorkies tend to favor males |

Shih tzus are sweet..maltese have completely different personalities than yorkies, but, as far as yorkies liking men better than women, well, that I don't agree with...mine are affectionate with hubby and me... |
Why not go to your local shelter (yes there are small dogs in shelters), and find a small dog that your hubby likes and that likes hubby. I dont' think any one breed prefers males over females. With my bully girl, even though she has not been around men much (her first yr was spent with me in an apt with 3 other girls, and her last 3 yrs have been spent with just me and mom). we have male visitors about once or twice a month and she goes BANANAS over men. If she is around any of my guy friends she prefers them over me. I don't know why she likes men so much. The other three dogs in my house don't really care one way or another, as long as they have someone to pet them. |

We have had a lot of different breeds and, for the most part the are all the same, when it comes to who they choose. My hubby wanted to have a dog all to himself likes yours does. So we got a female chihuahua. Everyone says that the females take up with men. Well we also mad hubby the one to take care of her. He feeds, sleeps, walks, gives treats, takes her out to potty. I mean everything. Now she wants nothing to do with anyone but him. I can take her out to potty but thats about it. When he is at work she will sit and sulk. My mom raises Shi tzus and they are the same way. My dad has all the girls in his lap most of the time. They are not as bad as my hubbies dog but we did that ourself. There are females that like Woman so that is why we done everything we could to make her like him. Hope this helps. |
A Boston terrier.. that would be my husbands baby and she is a small lap dog |
My mom and dad had a shih tzu. After my mom died, sweet little Hannah was SO wonderful for my dad. She was either in his lap or at his feet at all times. So I say shih tzu!! |
Both of my girls adore Daddy. Heck, as soon as he gets home, I'm SO yesterday's news:laugh: |
thanks for all the help! the good thing about some of these other dogs is that they are easier on the pocketbook too, which is definitely a consideration of ours. |
I think my next dog would be a Westie, but I need to do research on them to see how they are first. But I just think they are super cute! |
i saY chihuahua my guy adores my brother & his friends ! & hes a total lap dog he would love to spend all day on the couch watching tv |
What about a Rat Terrier?! I love that breed. I adopted one (my mother really but i considered him mines) from a shelter but he died when he was only 4 from liver problems.... He loved to sit and lay on me. He actual learned how to catch a bing bag and bring it back.. I loved him (now I'm sad)......... |
how about a english bulldog??? my husband does love trixe bell and rocky but he wants a bulldog also, we are planning to get one sometime next summer! from what i'm reading about bulldog they seem to be a great pet. just a thought:) |
