I need your help!

I've decided to buy a sewing machine, but I don't know where to start. I don't want anything fancy or expensive. I'm a beginner, so something simple would do the trick. Any suggestions on which brand to buy? Also, what other things will I need to start off? I'm just going to start off simple making blankets, beds, pillows...things that aren't too complicated... Hopefully I can manage sewing in a straught line. lol.


Also, if you have any tricks you use while sewing and don't midn sharing, I'd really appreicate it!

I would suggest going to JoAnn Fabrics. There is a separate sewing machine shop in there where you can buy a machine and they will give you a free lesson with it. I bought mine there and I love it!!

I started out sewing a blanket. It lookes simliar to a pillow case, but its actually sew in on 4 sides.

I think if you buy a sewing machine from Jo Anns they will give free sewing classes, but it might be only for a certain amount sewing machine.

You have a natural knack for sewing. I saw your thread with the things that you have sewn, they are great..........and you said that you had just started!!

Thanks. I'll have to checkout Joanns... I only ever go look at their fabrics. lol.

I have another question... If I'm goign to make a pillow, after I've flipped the fabric and stuffed the pillow, how do I go about closing it off? I used to always get stuck on that part.

I actually just ordered a new machine from an Ebay store (free shipping, too)!! I went around the the various stores looking at machines (Walmart, JoAnns, Hancocks) and decided what I wanted and found it for $60 less at Ebay than anywhere else was offering.

Even though you are going to start with the basics, get a machine that has any many options as you think you might need. Otherwise, you'll find that you'll have one for a few months and wish you would have gotten a few more bells and whistles. It is amazing the difference $20-40 can make on the options available!!!!

On the pillow sew the last edge and leave just enough open for turning and stuffing,turn right side out turn raw edges under and top stitch,that's how I would do it. Make sense?
As far as a sewing machine start simple.walmart has a few good buys all around 125.-150.

I'd say go Sears... they even offer lessons sometimes... they have a wide variety... and you can easily return or exchange... Or Sams or costco, they have basic ones that are not so basic, if that makes any sense, and prices are pretty good... Go girl!!! I have two industrial sewing machines, one antique one made a lamp, one antique one working (was my grandma's), one oldie but goodie, one newer but too small,and one embroidery machine... My husband cannot believe I still look at the stores... It's like an addiction!!!!!!!:eek: :D

Thank you for your suggestions. I always seem to forget to check Sears out first. They have always carried quality products, but with the malls and outlets ... I tend to forget about looking there.

Currently I am using my sister's Elna, which will hopefully end up being mine since she said she is looking into getting a new general sewing machine with her Xmass bonus. After playing around with it I found it to be very easy to use. Elna's are a bit more on the expensive side though.
My Mother used to be a seamstress, so we have an industrial Singer which is way to fast for me to use. We also have a regular Singer machine, which needs to be fixed (I jammed the bobbin years ago), and a babylock serger. All the machines with the exception of the Elna are at least 25 years old, the serger takes a bit more time to thread but works nonetheless. About a year or so ago my sister bought a brand new babylock serger and it cost her around $2K:eek:. She also has an embroidery machine that she hasn't figured out yet:confused: I think she too has the sewing machine addiction, and we both have the hoarding fabric addiction:D
