Ok so I checked this out on SNOPES and it appears to be true.... http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp This has been verified by the FBI (Their link is also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. It is spreading fast so be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summons for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty, that a new and ominous kind of scam has surfaced. The caller claims to be a jury coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity just got stolen. The scam has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma . This (scam) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they're with t he court system. The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites, warning consumers about the fraud. Check it out here: http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel05/092805.htm <http://www.fbi.gov/pressrel/pressrel05/092805.htm> http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp <http://www.snopes.com/crime/fraud/juryduty.asp> |
Thank you for the warning. A good rule of thumb is to NEVER EVER give your SSN out to ANYONE over the phone. Way too many dishonest people in the world. |

That's so true!!! I feel bad b/c some individuals get those type of calls and they get scared & do give out too much info |
thanks for posting this, I have passed onto others ;) |
Good Thread! Yes it's true, I was asked once for my SS# over the phone, When I asked what office could I meet them at because I never give out information over the phone, they hung up on me.:) Heads up to those with kids in school. In some schools your kids ID is there SS#, Not a good idea, they had it like that 2 years ago at SDSU, and many had theirs stolen. It's now changed there, but many schools are still using the ss#'s:thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown :thumbdown |
I'm so glad you posted this. It's always good to be well informed. I can see why someone could be tricked into giving out info. when in shock with the information that there is a warrant out for their arrest. You know, if these criminals put as much time and creativity into living an honest life as they do in these schemes they'd probably be very successful. |
Wow, thanks for posting! I'll be sure to pass it on. |
Thanks for posting this I have sent this to all of my friends and family. |
The State Drivers License Rolls are used for County Court Jury Duty not SSN listings. If you ever receive a call like that you can call your County Clerk's office to verify &/or report it. I don't know what database the Federal Court uses. |
I sent this to all my friends and family.. and i hope you dont mind i cross-posted it on another forum. |
Great post! Thanks!! :thumbs_up |
I haven't heard of this, but thanks for the headsup. I'll definitly forward it! |
