Praying mantis on our patio door! 2 Attachment(s) Look what was hanging out on our patio door yesterday... Attachment 161892 Attachment 161893 ...and video of the creepy crawley! |
oh my those things are so big and creepy looking, I have not seen one in years! |
  I know Praying mantis's are "good" bugs because they eat other bugs. But I don't like them. They are WAY too big for a bug's size for me. ;) P.S. I couldn't watch your video. But I'm sure everyone who likes bugs will enjoy it. Are you listening, Debra, Highland Yorkies. :D |
I love Praying Mantis! I have very fond memories of them. One time I caught one in 5th grade and took it to science class. I kept it in a nice size critter keeper with Astroturf and a branch. It lived almost the entire year- one of my parents would bring crickets and/or meal worms from the pet store every Friday. She even laid egg sacks that hatched! Sorry that this story's so long! It just reminded me of that. :p |
I know they are good bugs, but they are so huge and alien looking! LOL. If one were crawling on me, I'd probably die of a heart attack for sure, even though I know it can't hurt me. Something creepy about it sitting down like at a picnic eating a bug with two hands they way we'd eat a sandwich!! |
Praying manthis's mean good luck. Also it is suppose to be illegall to kill one. (how would anyone know anyhow but it is). Did you know that the female beheads her lover when they are done mating:eek: |
I love them too! That one is a female isn't it? The females are the big green ones and the males are the smaller brown? I think??? |
He brought you good luck!! Aren't they just the greatest little guys!!! Wish we had some here. I didn't even know there were any in CA. I grew up playing with those guys. Love um!! :D |
I didn't know they were good luck. LOL, I could sure use some right now! He disappeared as mysteriously as he appeared. Jenn, I thought of you when taking the picture...thought of you and your spiders! LOL :) |

I think those are such neat bugs. We don't have them around here, but one year I ordered some, so got to see them for the first time. I can't remember why I ordered them...probably to eat mosquitos! |
Eww eww eww gross gross gross yuck yuck yuck! |
They sure can BITE !!!!!!! I'll take a walking stick over them anyday. |

I think they're fascinating, but now you've put that bizarre thought/picture in my head............................ |
Ha ha ha! OK, WHO was doing the commentary for the video. I have to know, who encouraged it to "go be beneficial somewhere." :D |

Seen a praying mantis today. Took my binxie outside and the mantis was stalking him! I know they don't just kill spiders and insects, they kill and eat mice, snakes, frogs, even humming birds. So I scooped up my little 5lb man and took him inside. Waiting for that bug to go away |
My x-husband saved a mantis from a spider's web one time.....in appreciation for being rescued from a stalking spider, the mantis looked loving at my x-husband, and immediately BIT him on the hand that had just lovingly rescued it from the jaws of a spider!!!! So much for appreciation in the world of insects!! While it cost that mantis his life, he couldnt have bitten a better scoundrel!!! |
I know this thread is old but I love mantises! I know what bugs to kill and which ones to leave. I even leave the black widows that are out of the way of the dogs. This year I've had much less crickets and roaches in our yard. We've also had a lot of big fat lizards helping to patrol my yard. |
