To those with a pet bird(s)?
 

So I've had Fern (a parrotlet) for two months or so. She's loves coming out of her cage and is very friendly. Sometimes though, she is so loud! It's horrible. Today she has been especially loud. I'm so worried about the people upstairs hearing her and complaining.

I don't know what to do- I've tried giving her treats (fresh foods, pasta, etc.), switching toys, extra time out of the cage- none of which have helped!

I know she's not going to be completely silent- but it's getting out of hand! :rolleyes:

Any suggestions?

Maybe she wants a bird bf :D

Yeah, that works. But then she starts right back up after I take it off. :(

There is nothing much you can do about the noise when it comes to birds/parrots. Even with cage covered, they still do make noise and I am not sure if I ever heard of a parrot/bird trained to be quiet.

Cover the cage or give her something new to do. I always put mine in front of a window or outside or stick some millet or a mirror in her cage.

I would say get her a bf, put a treat inside the cage that lasts long like those sticks, or put her cage next to a window but don't let the sunlight be directly on it.

Does she do it when you are in the room with her? I have 3 amazon parrots. 2 are a bonded pair and really don't care what I do but the 3rd is pretty attached to us. She will scream if she is alone and can hear our voices in a different part of the house. Her cage sits right by my desk in my office, and as long as I'm in sight of her she is quiet and content to just watch what I'm doing. If I spend most of the day in a different part of the house I bring her along on a tree stand and she is perfectly happy. She still does her morning and evening calls like most parrots do, but as long as her "flock" (the family) is it sight she is pretty quiet.

I forgot to add, if she is near a window where she can see or hear outside birds, that might make her scream more. My birds always make more noise when they can see and hear birds outside. That might be another thing to think about. I don't think getting her a bf will help...it will probably make double the noise. My amazon pair are much louder than the one that is "single".

She's actually WORSE if she's alone.

We have four birds, two upstairs and two down stairs, yes they can get very loud. When we are home their fine because we talk to them, it's when we are not in the room with them they get super loud. We put soft music on for them, it really helped a lot. You might give that a try.;)

After having the LOUDEST parrot in the history of creation, I researched everything to do for them. Not that it worked for MINE of course, LOL...but he was too spoiled from the get-go, so it's my own fault. One thing that the "experts" say to do, is to put him in his cage and go out of the room. Even if you're only out for a second, and he doesn't scream, go back in and give him a treat and praise him. Supposedly, if you do this over and over, and extend the times that you're out of the room, but try to go back BEFORE he starts squawking, he'll learn to be quiet while you're out of the room, b/c he knows that he'll get a treat when you return. So you have to be consistent with it and always give him a treat when you return (IF he's been good). There's a book you can get probably at Petco or Petsmart called something like "The Well-behaved Parrot".....you might look thru it and see if it might help. I was so lucky; I lived in an apartment complex for 14 years on the bottom floor at the end, always had people living above me and not once did anyone complain about my bird screaming; I had 2 of them, but at least the female was slightly more sedate (and I'm not joking about him being the loudest....here's a link to what he could have sounded like if he were just a teensy bit quieter:cool: http://www.mytoos.com/. Hopefully your neighbors are gone during the day when he does most of his vocalizing or when they're home in the evenings they have music or the tv on.

It's amazing how loud parrotlets can be, we have 5 of them right now and I can relate! We also have a macaw, IRN, quaker, which are much louder, believe me :) I wouldn't think your bird would be loud enough to really bother your neighbors, though, not like a macaw. Do you keep your bird in the room where you spend most of your time? Birds are very social and like to be near you. whatever you do, don't get her a bf, you will just end up with more parrotlets and more noise! Toys, treats, covering up the cage, all will help with some of it, but along with owning a pet bird comes noise, some are quieter than others, but all make noise in some way, you gotta love em, though. 5 PARROTLETS?? As horrible as this might sound, but I would NEVER get another! They are so much more difficult than dogs and cats.

Amoung other things, I miss using Yankee candles, lol. :rolleyes:
