Breeding with Oscar
 

Oscar is just finishing his Good Citizen training. He loves to learn and be praised foe his good conduct. He is great with new people and other dogs. Our trainer loves him and right now Oscar is working with a Pom rescue to help him socialize. I love watching him inter act with this little dog. He is so good to him. So I thought these qualities may be best carried on. How difficult is it breeding Yorkies. I have raised Rag doll cats for about 6 years and loved it.
Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated. It is a difficult decision because he is almost 6 months and should be neutered. I do want to do agility with him and maybe that will be enough.

Breeding Yorkies can be difficult... check out the Breeders Forum. It's best to wait until the growth plates are closed (determined by a vet through X-ray) somewhere between 8-14 months of age, before neutering. Congratulations onn his GC.

A great personality is a wonderful trait to pass along....but you have to consider the personalities of the dogs behind him.....as well as the personalities of dogs behind the intended momma. Great personalities are deeply entrenched in proven lines. If you do not have a dog with a 12 generation history of lines that personify "great personalities", you have absolutely no promise that your precious boy will throw that same trait. And personality is just a tiny portion of what Yorkies are built of.....there is conformation, color, coat, and all the multiple genetic issues you hopefully are able to dodge with a long history of proven lines. Breeding Yorkies is NOT a lark....it is a very expensive excursion, fraught with one labor intensive problem after another....and the willingness to provide a forever home and all the necessary medical care and expenses, if you produce a puppy that has a genetic issue that is treatable. You can not expect a new owner to have to assume the financial responsibility nor the heartache associated with raising a genetically defective pup. I wont even get into how unfair it is to the poor little pup. Neuter your Oscar and enjoy him as the wonderful, adorable, precious pet he is!

Thank you so much for your information. I was leaning towards not breeding anyway and you helped me so much!!!!! I know everything you said was absolutely true. I guess every mom thinks her Yorkie is special..... I know Oscar has his own special qualities and I think we are looking forward to agility, but we will see after he turns 1 year old.

Breeding Yorkies is probably not a lot more difficult than raising other breeds. The MOST IMPORTANT PRINCIPLE is "you get back what you put in" The most common issue is usually litter size They usually only whelp between 1 and 3 pups therefore this is not usually a lucrative venture.
