Coping with the Strike? Hi fellow North Easteners. Anyone from the NYC area affected by the Transit Strike? It has been an absolute nightmare over here for those of us unfortunate enough to be affected by this. I live in the Bronx and work in dowtown Manhattan and I have not been able to get into the city since Monday. I am a municpal worker so I was fortunate enough to be allowed to report to an alternate location, a local agency in the Bronx. I have to walk about 5 miles each way to get there and it has been bitterly cold. News reports say this thing might end today. I ask my fellow Yorkie Talkers to pray for us out here in NYC that this thing gets resolved soon. Any one else out here with horror stories to share about how this strike has affected their daily lives? |
It's been tough for me to get into the city. I work on 34th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue. I wasn't able to go into work Tuesday or Wednesday but today (Thursday) my husband was able to drive me and 2 of my co-workers into the city. My husband works in Brooklyn. Any news on when the strike will be over? |
I stayed home today (this whole thing has me so stressed out) and I saw the news at 12. Apparently at 4pm today the union will vote whether or not they will return to work as early as this evening. There is a mediator group that has intervened and they want the workers to return to work while negotiations can be worked out. The TWU president Toussaint said he agrees that they should go back to work. There was also a media blackout imposed so that no further negative comments from either side can be broadcast. they feel this is keeping tensions flaired and making things harder for both sides to come together (did you see how Bloomberg called them thugs LOL). Let's keep our fingers crossed that something can be resolved by today. |
I just heard on the news here at work that it is OVER |
BTW, I used to work in 330 W. 34th Street. |
Not officially, they still have to vote on it. But we certainly are close!! :D |

NYC Transit Union Moves to Return to Work AP - 41 minutes ago NEW YORK - Striking bus and subway workers agreed Thursday to "take steps" to go back to work while their union and the transit authority resume negotiations, a mediator said. The deal with the Transit Workers Union could pave the way for a resumption in service by Friday, if the union's executive board gives the final OK. The strike, the system's first in 25 years, halted service for millions. "Both parties have a genuine desire to resolve their differences," said Richard Curreri, head of a three-member state mediation panel. "They have agreed to resume negotiations while the TWU takes steps to return its membership." |
