3-3 1/2 lb Yorkie full grown
 
I have a chance to purchase a Yorkie from a very reputable breeder. The pup is now 10 weeks old and 1.5 lbs. The breeder estimates her full grown weight to be 3-3 1/2 lbs. Both of her parents are over 5 lbs. I wanted a small Yorkie but was looking for one within the breed standard. I thought the breed standard was 4-7 lbs. Today I found out that the AKC breed standard is actually " up to 7 lbs." I've heard so much about the smaller dogs being less healthy. Is this true? Should I buy this dog since I know it well bread or should I wait for another litter that has a larger dog? I'd like to hear all your thoughts. I just don't know what to do>

I would think that if both parents are over 5 lbs, that the yorkie would be 4-5 lbs. Make sure it is healthy. There is a growth chart, but you can't always go by it. My little girl (my avatar picture) her mother is 6lbs, and father is 3 1/2 lbs. Gracie is 4lbs. 5 oz. I was so happy when she hit 4 lbs. (she will be 2 years old next month) Even with her I have to be careful if little kids come to my house. I usually pick her up and hold her. Little ones are cute, but their health is the most important thing. My opinion only, You hope that the puppy grows to be over, or at least 4 lbs. Again, my opinion only. I have 2 other yorkies. One is 5 1/2 pounds and the other is 6 lbs. They are all beautiful! :aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork

i say if you trust the breeder for a happy healthy pup go for it!!! let us know what you decide on!!

The health depends more on the breeding then it does size IMO. Georgie tips the scales at 4lbs and has had issues. I don't believe his issues are always related to his size but I do think the worry that I have is. Georgie can't miss a meal even at almost 7 I worry since he is so small. I would say as long as you feel the breeder is reputable then go for it! Georgie is a lot of love and fun in his small little package:D

I agree with Georgies Momma...I say if the pup is healthy then go for it....the heatlth would be my concern.
