Vet Recommendations?
 

Hello Everyone,

I live in the Boston area and just lost my beloved 3.5 lb Yorkie during a MRI. It appears the vet over anesthetised him. I just got a beautiful Yorkie puppy and am looking for a new vet. I am so concerned for her welfare and would like any vet recommendations you can give me. I am still grieving for my 3.5 lb baby and don't want to take my new one to be checked out without some help from fellow Yorkie lovers. I will drive anywhere to ensure she receives the best possible care. THANKS!

Where in the Boston area do you live? (North shore, South Shore, in Boston..?) I live on the South Shore. Congrats on the new pup!

I have been to Angell Medical Center and think they are wonderful. Brooke has her neurologist there and he saved her life!! I'm sure their regular vets are great also.

Thanks so much for the responses. I live in Waltham but will go anywhere in the greater Boston area for a good vet. My puppy is almost 15 weeks old and weighs 1 lb. 11 oz. She was born in a litter of six puppies and was so small when she was born, she had to be hand fed. My breeder doesn't breed for small puppies, she breeds for quality 4 to 6 lb show dogs. She said the large litter is unusual and Hillary is the smallest she's ever had. I'm still mourning my other dog, Lollipop, and am very concerned about getting Hillary the best care. She's a very sweet, playful little girl and is helping me through this difficult period more than I can say. I'll try to get a picture up of her soon.

Thanks, Miss Mandy. She is a doll. I bought her from a breeder in Lawrence. I visited with her for several hours before buying a puppy and was very impressed. She is knowledgeable and concerned about placing her puppies in good homes. I can give you her name if you're interested. She had several more puppies and more waiting to be born.

I am so sorry to hear about loosing Lollipop during the MRI. But also want to say congrats on your new little baby, Hillary! I am also looking for a good vet for my little yorkie in the Boston area.....hopefully we get some good suggestions here!

i would say the best place towards Boston is Angel Medical....however if you're willing to drive...Tufts Medical Center for Vet. Medicine is in Grafton, Mass.

Thank you for your kind words. I now have two babies. Hillary, who I got in May and Chelsea, her sister, who came home with me about a month later. Hillary's weight at birth was one ounce. She now weighs 2 pounds and Chelsea weighs 2.5. They are 8 months old. The breeder tries to breed larger dogs because they are healthier but these two came from a large litter and were the smallest. The largest of the litter is now 8 or 10 pounds if you can believe it.

Hillary has a disk problem between her first and second vertebrae in her neck. I took her to Angell Memorial to a neurologist, Dr. Ruehlman, and was very impressed. Hillary has to wear a brace on her neck the rest of her life but she is handling it very well. Surgery does not have a good success rate so I am opting for the brace. My breeder has become my friend. She hand fed Hillary from birth since she was so small and loves her as much as I do. Hillary's welfare has become a joint effort between the two of us and I cannot say enough about what a loving caring person she is and how much she cares for all of the dogs she raises and sends to new homes.

I just wanted everyone to know that if you need a neurologist, Dr. Ruehlman is very thorough and spent alot of time explaining the situation with me. Everyone is very kind at Angell and really showed special attention to every animal I saw there. It's a large, clean hospital that looks like a human hospital. Very impressive. The fact that it is a MSPCA hospital makes it even more impressive. I've had some bad experiences with neurologists in the past but Dr. Ruehlman has restored my faith that good ones are out there.

By the way, Chelsea is perfectly healthy and is a very active, normal puppy. I am still looking for a primary vet for routine visits. I live Southwest of Boston now, but will go anywhere for a good vet. If anyone has recommendations, I would love to have them.

There are plenty of good vets in your area. I live north of Boston and i have a WONDERFUL vet.... if you never get to find a good one closed to your place i will be very happy to give you his information.... he trully loves and cares. And i have referred many people that have our puppies to him and i never heard of one single client that is not very satisfied!!!

I have heard of a couple good primary vets in the Waltham area....

In Cambridge there is a Banfield hospital now, i know the vet who is in charge there now, i love her very much as well... she is a good vet, Caring and knowledgeable with tiny breeds....
