What is this "coughing??" Gemma usually only does this at night when we go to bed, but every night! And it goes on several times, sometimes she needs water afterward. The first video doesn't let you hear the sound she makes at the end, but the second one does. It sounds like she has a fur ball!! But nothing ever comes up either? She also appears to have allergies because she sneezes a lot - could these be related? What does it sound like to you? I hope its not bad? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lO69aViKVz4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxZz_0hqt6g |

Sorry I'm no help, but it looks uncomfortable for her. Hope someone can help you!! |
No one has a clue  |
i don't htink its anything too serious. some times morgan does that too. i think its because she gets alittle dust or pollen in her throat and that's just their way of trying to clear it. it doesn't sound like a reverse sneeze or a collapased trach |
Armani does that too, I think he just clearing his throat. |
Well I could live with that if thats all it is!! It just concerns me because it happens every night after she is fast asleep...it wakes her up and she has to stand up and hack it out, like you see here. It goes on a good 15 minutes sometimes  Happy that you don't think it has anything to do with her trachea! |
I am sorry that little Gemma is having these coughing spells. I would watch her closely and take her to the vet if she has any other symptoms. Give that sweet baby a hug :ghug: |
I don't think Gemma's coughing is anything serious. Both of my Yorkies do it! My vet demonstrated the noise I was describing to him, and I said "That's it!" He said his Yorkie does it, too. He says they are just clearing their sinuses and it's nothing to worry about. Lorna |
I was told yorkies are know for allergies. My house is all woodfloors, and tile. I have alot of area rugs. When I move the beds, and things and sweep alot. Cupcake starts sneezing. She will sneeze everyday for about a day or two. |
Bubbles has always done that. I think it's just clearing her throat. |
have you ever asked the vets? they can feel around her throat and see if her glands are swollen. |
Connor did it too. I finally got to thinking that the ceiling fan might be to much for him, so we bought an soft-sided enclosed cat bed to put on our bed and he loved it! He also quit coughing not long after that, I guess because the wind from the fan was not hitting him.... |

I just had Meckie to the vet for the exact same thing -- excessive coughing that came on fairly suddenly. He examined her and took a chest x-ray (she's 13 and he wanted to be sure it wasn't her heart). He believes it was a combination of bronchitis, allergies and a slightly narrowing trachea. He put her on an antihistimine and antibiotic. The improvement was almost immediate. I hope it will be a quick fix for Gemma too. |

Honey its just a cough from breathing cold air. (can be allergies, it IS related but most likely not) I demonstrate this to everyone I sell a puppy to especially when the weather is cold or changing or if it is really hot and I know they will have the cold air on for the ride home. I explain NOT to let the baby breath air from the air conditioner. All it takes it one time for the baby to breath cold air. ###a cough that ends in a gag. It usually takes 6 weeks to stop BUT medication WILL NOT HELP. A trip to the vet not only is costly and will not help but will also expose your baby to other illnesses and the vet will most likely give it antibiotics which can leave it immune for when it really needs it. I learned this when my air in my home sent the cold air to my puppy room before the rest of my house and the cold air blew close to the puppy pen. I was told to close this vent off and it worked. I also explain to winter puppy buyers to put a heat lamp outside where the new baby will "GO POTTY" and to turn it on to heat the area first. A couple of winters ago my electric was out because of ICE for a day and a couple of my adults "cough/gagged" after that. You can give Benedril in very small doses it give relief if it seams extreme at night (usually gets worse then like our colds get) I am lucky enough to have a friend that is a good vet*;) |
