I'm gonna be a Nana! It might have been an accident on my part, but my Rosie is going to have puppies mid November. When my human daughter was expecting my first Grand daughter, I searched and read books on what she needed to do according to that day and age. I can't seem to find on here what I need to do for my four legged daughter. What is the best food for my Rosie and her puppies? She loves boiled chicken, can she still eat that? I'm so excited, yet scared all at the same time! |
She needs plenty of calcium etc to grow those puppies. Have you taken her to the vet??? I think they have special food for mommies to be and nursing mommies. |

 Momma needs special food that promotes healthy development in those babies, plus additional calories and minerals, etc. Then diet changes when babies are born, nutritional requirements change substantially for a nursing female and newborns. |
She needs lots of added calories- now and when the pups come, to help her produce good milk and keep her babies growing. Chicken is great. So are bits of scrambled egg, puppy food (yes, mom can have some too!), wet and canned foods, and other cooked meat, like beef. Get well checks at the vet during pregnancy- they should scan the pups, poke around and generally be sure they're developing. Make sure your vet is either on call, or you have a good e-vet so if there's trouble during delivery you can get a c-section STAT. Many dogs like to labor at night so a 24 hour vet is a must. When she is nearing her due date she will start nesting. Now is the time to make a whelping area for her, where she can birth and raise her babies. It needs to be secure, easy to clean, and full of lots of bedding and blankets for nesting. It should be in a quiet area so she is not stressed. |
