How did you ever teach her to roll a ball around that is as big as SHE is. ROFL...thanks for the smile today!
Louise and Zachary | Thanks, everybody!
Louise, I started by putting the ball about 4-5 feet away between her and me with no obstacles around it. Then I'd tell her to go get it. She'd bite or paw at it and it would roll to me, and I'd reward her with treats. Then I gradually started moving it farther away, rewarding with treats when she got it to me.
Both my dogs struggled when we advanced to the stage where they had to turn the ball around, but Jillie figured it out pretty quickly. She learned that if she pawed at it, she could turn it around. It took maybe a week's worth of practice in short 10-15 minute sessions. If she started getting frustrated, I reverted to an easier stage, rewarded for success and quit.
She'll still occasionally push it into a room and not be able to retrieve it, but if there are few obstacles for it to get caught on, she does pretty good. ;) |
