He's puking up his food for 2 days now...
 

HI everyone,

Davis my 15 month old yorkie has been puking 2 or 3 times a day for the past 2 days or so. He seems fine other than the puking, he's still interested in playing with me and his toys and seemed fine of his walk this morning... my husband seems to think he's just eating to quickly, some of the kibbles dont look like they've been chewed, he's still going #2, but they're about 1/2 the size they usually are. We usually let him free-feed, he never eats all his kibbles at once. I give him 3/4 cup of food in the morning and it lasts him all day. My mom suggested taking the food away and just feeding him a little at a time, he still has access to his water dish at all times.

The first time he threw up, I had been doing some training/ tricks with him and was giving him small pieces of cooked turkey breast as a treat. I stopped giving him anything but his kibbles since the first incident (2 nights ago), but he's still throwing up. Anyone have any suggestions? Do I need to take him to the vet? He's still very active..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It could be a simple thing as eating too quickly. There are some bowls that are made to help out with this. They have some high bumpy things at the bottom of the bowl, so the dog has to work to get to the kibble.

If you have not had full blood work done, including a BATS test, I would highly suggest you do so. BATS testing is not so expensive maybe $60 or so.

Could it be that giving him all the daily food at once in the morning allows him to gobble down too much at once? He could be overeating and once it gets mixed with stomach liquid it expands and it can only come back up? I had a similar issue and two things helped a lot. One, I fed him three smaller meals in a special dish that limits the eating rate, and two I got small breed kibble with smaller pieces that digest more easily if not chewed. I found that the expanded larger kibble sometimes came back whole, and perhaps it was harder for it to pass out of the stomach into the intestines? The fact that he seems well in other ways is encouraging.
Having said all the above, there is a chance that your dog has some medical reason for throwing up, and he should be seen by a vet if it continues. As your dog is relatively young these symptoms could be early signs of some underlying problem, and he should be tested. So please see a vet if he is not better in a couple of days, better to be safe than sorry.

What kind of turkey breast? The deli turkey meats are not the same as what you cook at home, they are processed and they have way too much salt for a dog. How much does he weigh, 3/4 cup sounds like a lot. If he's still throwing up, yes, I'd take him to the vet.

I may be over reactive, but any time one of my pets starts throwing up like that, I call the vet and ask what they think. That's what they are there for. It may be nothing or maybe it could be. But being that tiny and throwing up for two days, I would be taking him to see if there is something wrong with him. I worry too much about dehydration, etc. Good luck and I hope your little one gets better soon.

Of course one has to go to a vet when a pet is sick and needs medical treatment. But I thought that posters came on YT first to get advice from those here who may have had a similar experiences, before a vet visit. I know when I had my first Yorkie, he would be to the vet immediately he threw up or had a looser stool etc. The poor dog was subjected to major and sometimes invasive tests, mostly for no purpose. Often he would be given heavy duty meds without any real diagnosis. I now for one do observe the dog for a while and mostly he recovers with no vet treatment and no drugs with side effects.
We with time learn to differentiate between a simple minor tummy upset and a potentially serious problem, but when the pet is behaving normally otherwise, we do not have to rush to the vet and put our pet through that trauma.
If the advice given here is to always take to the vet for anything, why would anyone need to post here?
I know my views will probably result in angry comments, but dogs do have minor upsets which are not serious and sometimes new dog moms have not had enough experience to know that. We can help there.
But again, if in doubt see a vet if you are concerned.

I don't think running to the vet immediately is always a bad thing. However, I do think there are some things it is ok to wait 24 hours on. But This has been going on for 48 hours now so I would think it is time to seek medical advice. The last time my pup was sick she was almost dehydrated within 24 hours. I think throwing up 2 to 3 times a day for 48 hours plus is a good reason to go to the vet. Just my opinion.

I see there is a parallel thread on general yorky discussion, looks like it is being taken care of and the dog will see the vet on Monday if nothing changes.

If I went to the vet every time one of my guys threw up I may as well live at the vet's office:( I have taken them a few times in the past, but now I know what to look for and I can wait..but like you said it took experience to be able to do so.
I still think several times a day for two or more days is serious, if nothing more then to worry about the dehydration. My vet has given meds to stop the nauseas and that helps too, but sometimes it is just "lets wait and see" or "lets do test-- that prove nothing" It is a hard call. I would rather error on the side of taking to the vet TOO often then to wait until the pup is TOO sick to help.. sigh
I guess it is like children, my first child went to the doc at the drop of a hat, my second I was more experienced. I still took her to the doctor when I was unsure:rolleyes:

Puking for 2 days 2 to 3 times a day is a reason to go to the vet. If a dog just had an upset stomach and puked a couple of times the advice would be different.

The poster said that she was going to the vet last Monday, does anyone know how her dog is now?? I think, on another parallel thread, she called the vet that morning of the original post and was told to keep a watch and come in on Monday.
This thread did not mention this, or we all would not have needed to give our opinions.
We can only hope the dog is ok as we have heard no news.

still puking I see, just kidding but I wish there was an update, and I also wish someone would post a new video thread. I don\'t know why I feel like this but I find it disturbing when scanning down the forums to just keep seeing the first thread in the video section titled "been puking up food for 2 days".

Id go to the vet. and thank you for not putting in a video! I was scared to click your post as its in the Video section of the forum.
