Distressing video: yorkie wheezing Hi, I am not at all posting this video for the entertainment value. I'm posting to compare notes with other yorkie owners about their wheezing problem. From this video, it looks (and sounds) serious. Comments? Obviously he needs to go to the vet, but this video is also for the vet. Personally, IMHO it sounds like the trachea. |
Oh that's really sad, poor thing could hardly walk. So you don't know the owner, you just found it on youtube? Sounded really strange. Could it be asthma? |
It does sound more like asthma but it could also be congestive heart failure, could also be heat stroke. I do hope the owner got this poor baby to the vet. |
Hi, No, this is Ranger. I am the owner. This just now happened. Ranger was all worked up and running really hard, but just doesn't know his limits. He's all calm now and not panting at all, which is why I needed to snap the video to show the vet. I went ahead and let him play hard one last time so I could get a good shot of the video--which I almost regretted doing, but now I don't because the video's "good". I'm glad to hear you think it's asthma and not trachea. By the way, I tend to lean against it being congestive heart failure because he's only 3 years old, and not heat stroke because it was 71 degrees. |
I wish that Vet. had also talked about the sounds/signs of CT, because both CT and the asthma he's talking about sound exactly the same. I don't think these two things can be properly diagnosed without x-rays. |
Whatever the cause I would be going to the vet ASAP as it def sounds like it could be life threatening. Does he do this at any other time or only when he plays hard ? Also it could be heat if it is 71 now but has been significantly colder in the days prior as it takes time for a body to adjust to a drastic change in temp. |
Do you use a collar or a harness on you baby ? I would not be putting anything around his neck from now on & just to let you know that 3 yr old dogs can have congestive heart failure. It could be any of the things mentioned or any kind of heart problem, it could be none of the things mentioned but what ever it is this is a serious symptom so I would get him to the vet & not let him get so worked up till he's seen a vet as he could get worse & not pull out of it the next time. I'll be Praying for your baby. Please let us know what your vet says. |

I really hate to throw this information out, but I feel it's necessary so you can also ask the Vet. to test for heart worms. I forgot about this in my first response, but back in 1972 living in FL. I had a little poodle given to me. She did sound just like your dog, and it was only when she played or ran. It was heartworms. The treatment was extremely hard on her and she died. Please, get your Vet. to check for heartworms and have x-ray taken of her chest. It could be nothing more than an allergy, but why take risks. |

He's about a month overdue on heartworm meds. I don't think it's heartworms, but it looks pretty clear, he needs X-rays, and no roughhousing until Monday. I'm just glad I snapped the video so I don't get the vet saying everything's fine because he didn't see the symptoms. |

This is the only one I would say constitutes an attack. He has always snorted inhaling when we play ball or when he gets really excited. But this time we kept playing through it and it escalated to some really high pitched wheezing and then he stopped in his tracks and stumbled like you saw in the video. I always figured if he played too hard beyond his ability he would just slow down and stop. Nope. Ranger is freakin' crazy. Which I always considered one of his good qualities.... I hope he not only stays healthy, but stays crazy as always. He was born crazy. |
