A little embarrassed to post this.. I posted a thread a couple of days ago about Jesse and his not liking people, especially the little girl I care for..well today I took a video. The first part of the clip is Jesse getting stressed out because there was a stranger in the house, an Electrician, because a room is being renovated..this man even picked Jesse up and petted him, as soon as he put him down Jesse went back to barking at him! The last part of the clip is showing how he behaves around the little girl, especially if he is up with me, he acts vicious, I've never seen anything like it..she has petted him down, but as soon as she will go to walk away from him, he will for sure attack her! It's very strange, I just don't know why people can pick him up and pet him, but yet when they release him he acts like this.:( This actually reminds me of a chihuahua that I saw on Youtube with the dog whisperer:rolleyes: |
First assure them that the person is okay. Then a firm "NO" and remove from everyone. I had one that acted up with strangers and barked inappropriately. I would say "NO" in a very stern voice and then put them out on the patio or in another room. I would let them back in with us after 10 min or so but right back if they continued the behavior. He still will start to bark at strangers, which is not a bad thing. I first reassure that it is okay and then give a "NO" if needed. I don't have to go any further now. |

That is what I've been doing, I say no and separate him from everyone, It hasn't made a difference yet. I'm not to concerned about adults, when they do go to pet him, Jesse doesn't do anything..it's the little girl I worry about, she has petted him with me there and I have been very cautious, but I would never chance leaving him alone with her. |
Oh my goodness! I hope you figure something out :-/ |
My little guy (a maltese) does that with little kids too. He's great with my younger siblings and my boyfriend's younger nieces and nephews but around other children, he's vicious. At first I thought he was just really excited to see them because his tail was wagging like crazy (which I assumed meant he was happy) but he jumped and nipped at my little cousin's shirt and that's when I realized he doesn't like little kids. It's hard for me because I have a huge extended family with tons of little children. I supervise them carefully when they're with him so I don't think anyone's harm him before. I'm going to be following this post because any advice you share with the OP is advice I will be taking too! Thanks. |
Do you think the little girl has accidentally hurt him before? Maybe he associates her with that? |

Sorry about your Maltese, I know how distressing it is! |
 Wow the end was scary!! I wish you luck! |
Could this be territorial? Will he do the same thing in someone else's home? The reason I asked if it is territorial is because it looked like his tail was wagging like crazy! |
Wow that was really scary when he started flipping out at the last few seconds of the video...but when I seen the little girl run pass I had to laugh. Not that this is a funny situation, because it isn't...but the lil girl looked like a lil running munchkin. Lol :D |
I would absolutely recommend you consult an animal behaviorist. I don't think Jesse can be fixed on a forum. None of us are experts. Behaviorists and trainers actually train the owners how to deal with the behavior. This is serious behavior that probably will escalate to someone getting bitten if it isn't dealt with correctly. I would not let him be around children at all from now on. |
I would not let him be around that little girl with the way he was behaving! That was very scary the aggression he showed to her. I know he's just a little tiny dog but would that be appropriate behavior for a large dog? Absolutely not~ :( You need to consult and expert who can deal with his behavior before he bites someone. I do think when he was being held back from the little girl it made his behavior even worse. Until you can get him into some training classes with a behaviorist I would suggest that he be crated while your are babysitting or workers are in the house. Both for his safety and others. |
Gosh then my Little Girl will shock you. I have a maltese who does that and honestly it doesn\'t bother me. She does not bite or hurt anyone and I let her wear herself out. She does that to people she doesn\'t know and after she see\'s them for a while she\'s happy. She stops when she\'s comfortable with them. |
how old is jesse? i have a yr old named keno and he acts the exact same way, its hard taking him for walks because he barks at EVERYTHING! i even enrolled him in classes, the did help on some things but not on the barking which i was hoping stop :/ the trainer said hes in his teenage phase and that it should pass, i just hope it does soon. |
