Anal glands Any feedback would be helpful. My vet charges me 25 dollars any time I bring benson in to have her take care of them. Anyone who could give me guidance on how to do it myself? |
You know you are really not supposed to squeeze their anal glands it can cause problems instead of relieving them. If you have a groomer that does it too much it can actually give a dog an anal gland impaction. They are supposed to naturally empty when your pup defecates and if they scoot their butt on the carpet or grass that is also them expressing their glands. I never let anyone do it to them and never have had any problem with it. |

Anyway, if the OP still wants to know how, PM me and I'll try to explain it...it's super duper easy!! A vet tech my brother was dating showed me (she didn't actually do it, because we were hanging out in the living room, but she showed me where to put my hand and how to squeeze....it was very easy when I actually did it with her in the tub). |
I'm with YorkieChick on this one. I never empty the anal glands. Only if the dog is having a problem with them should they be emptied. |

P.S. My dad was asking my brother's gf about how to do it on his dog, which is why I said she showed me how...she was really showing him, but I paid attention and learned too. I talked to our vet about it before I actually did it. ;) |
You can find how to do it on YouTube but I personally think a professional should do it and only when necessary like Lorraine said some need it some don't check with your vet first before attempting yourself.... |
My older cross breed needs her glands done regularly as she cant express them herself. The vet used to do it but now she gets them done when she goes to the grooomer, ask your vet or groomer to show you how its done. Debbier2010 is correct there are videos on Youtube but I would prefer to be shown how to do it by a vet/groomer. |
I will def. take Fynnlie to the vet to have it done. |
I'm a groomer and the advise I have is you should only do it every 6-8 wks and only small breed dogs. Large breed do it themselves. You need to be really careful not to hurt them so I say you let your vet of groomer do it. |
I have never let anyone vet or groomer do that to my yorkies if they don't have a problem with it don't let them do it...cause it can cause problems and than you will have to take them every 2 weeks to the groomer and have it expressed or they could get an infection. |
Some need it done and some don't. If scooting, biting, etc., then it is probably time. The ones that go to the groomer and keep getting it done may have more of an issue because they just stop expelling themselves. Also, firm stool should help. You can empty them internally or externally. There is a lot of talk about it being easy to cause damage, but I have not found that to be the casue. I've been told this isn't true and there is no special method to it. It's not like a vet can squeeze glands better than an owner... Of course check with your vet first though. |
