Leash walking need with toby We need help leash walking. Toby is small 5 lbs, when on the leash all he want to do is run.. What can i do, second he is quite all day long until it bed time then he want to play he sleeps with us in our bed but come on playing at 12pm? |
Hi Welcome to YT! How old is your little boy? |
Try stopping and switching directions in leash walking. And don't always walk the same direction. Walk different ways so it doesn't become too familiar. Reward them when they do it right. And make it fun. Sometimes, you can tell the to "run". Other times, you can tell them "slow." Above all, try to get them to focus on you. When they look at you while walking by your side, praise and reward. When they tug, stop or switch directions. Just be consistent and it'll pay off. Good luck! |
Toby Toby is just 6 months old. He can sit and lay down and knows his name. We have entered him in school, but he still has a hard time with loose leash walking. and most likley it's MY FAULT :animal-pa |
Being consistent, has been a problem here in New England the weather has been so hot sometimes over 90. What do you do when the weather is so steaming you can't breath. It's been hotter here then in Florida.. |
Well, as far as the weather goes, try early morning and late evening. But Mike is right ..its all about consistency. It will come. He is still very young. Use praise and treats. Try to keep his attention on you when you are walking. Mike had some great suggestion. I consider him a Master when it comes to training!:D |
ps. at least he is moving forward. my little one was so stubborn until age 12 months..she would not walk. she planted her paws in the ground and said no. So I would carry her to our destination and she would finally walk back. Now she walks Both directions!! |
Thank you, Toby when he was very young would not walk in the drive way. But know he's like a Jack rabbit to run to his girl friend home and play. It's a fenced in yard and they play for hours. Which is do for our sleep time. There play time is all in the cool of the day. During class he would go there with out eating but my treat were to big for him but now I have started giving him tiny little treats he doesn't know it but it's his dinner. LOL...Ok I will work on my walking in early morning and the cool of the night. |

OMG....That's Brandi. She has gotten better but now her thing is when she doesn't want to come in from our walks, she stops at the end of the driveway. She will not budge because she wants stay outside. |
Leash Walking I know it takes time to train your little darling on a leash.Just remember, patience:).Also, please use a harness and not a collar on your baby......They have such tiny necks and its easy to get a collapsed trachea...So please use a harness...........:aimeeyorkBoops mom |
I am sorry to say I can't be of any help. My baby is 2 months on the 12th and 2.1 lbs. I am happy to say it only took me 3 days to leash train him and he is such an angel. All I did was made sure the collar and leash were both light and made it exciting for him. Like I would run a bit ahead and call too him like he did something good like...come on Spike, your such a good boy! yes you are baby and he would run up wanting lovings and now he knows if he is a good boy on the leash I love him up and we all know they love lovings..lol Sorry I can't be more of a help. Maybe try one of his special fave toys to bring on the walk? Good luck! |
Leash walking Please new yorkie owners....................NO COLLARS PLEASE. Collars can due irreputable damage to their tiny tracheas!!!!!!!!!!Please always remember to use a harness..........no matter how small........:aimeeyork boops mom |
No need to worry the only collar Toby wears is for his tags. I used a harness but I am going to change to a new harness that clips in front it's an easy walker it should be better.. He is so very good and loves to loves us, would love to get a bother or sister for him. If anyone know of a Yorkie needed a good loving home WE HAVE ONE HERE!! Attleboro,Ma Thanks for all you help. |
