help with fear Hi, I need some help, my new rescue yorkie is terrified of my husband and we have tried everything. My husband tried feeding him and giving him treats and nothing is working. Does anyone have any solution for us? |
How long have you had you little one? Sometimes it just takes time. Have him keep feeding him, throwing him a treat etc without trying to get too near. Hopefully in a few months he'll come around. |
Just give him some time, he may have had a bad experience with men in the past. It may take time for him to trust your husband. Maybe have your husband put his food down for him even if he has to put it down and walk away. The pup will probably come to trust him because that is where his food comes from. Not sure but it worked with my cat who was a stray. It took her a while to come near me, but she would always eat when i walked away. Now she is laying on my bed all curled up next to me. Now I can't get her away from me!!! LOL:D |
We have a male guest staying at our house and Marley is afraid of men. The trainer told us he is not to look directly at Marley. He is to feed him (like your husband is doing) and to keep treats in his pocket so when he walks into the room he tosses them on the floor like he's feeding the chickens. He said Marley will start to associate him with all things that are good. It is frustrating because Marley will adjust to him being in the room but if he leaves the room and comes back in Marley barks at him like he's never seen him before. I think it's going to take us both a lot of time and patience for them to gain trust in men. |
Fear of men Thank you for all your advice, I have had my rescue yorkie"Tarsan" for 6 months and it still has not gotten better. Perhaps he still needs more time. I will take your advice. |
I agree with the treat part..Maybe he could try taking him for walks or, letting your husband feed the dog instead of you. I'm sure being a rescue he probably had a horrible life before. My parents rescued a 7 month old schnauzer (Heidi passed away at 7 yrs old 6 months ago) Heidi was rescued from a mill by a woman that rescues mill dogs. Heidi was kept in a cage until this woman rescued her. She was very timid and would shake at the littlest noise. With love and patience Heidi got A LOT better...She was still a timid dog but, not as bad as when my parents first got her...Just be patient...I'm sure he will be fine...just give him time. |
