I need help with training?????:confused:Okay here is the problem I just recently bought a Yorkie. She is about 9 weeks old.. She came from what you can call a puppy mill.. So its really hard to train her. I think she is getting confused as to where her bed is? 6:00am I wake up take her to her wee wee pad to do her business then I leave at about 6:45 to work. I return home at lunch time to check up on her because she's so little. So I come at about 12:00pm clean what she's dirtied... Get home at about 4:15 or so. My problem is that since I know she is so little I'm scared to crate train her because I know they can't keep it in for so many hours. So I leave her in a baby yard where she has a little bed and her toys and her weewee pad and food. BUT at night when I put her in the crate to sleep I wake up in morning and she had pee'd inside of it. Could it be that she getting confused since she sleeps in a comfy bed while I'm at work.. What should I do :( |
Training Hey, I got my yorkie at 8 weeks old and do the crate training at night and in the pen in the day time while I am away on wee pads and he does fine with it. He does have accidents on the floor if I am not watching him. But usually does pretty well with the pads. He has never wet inside the crate at all. I use one of my t-shirts with my smell on it for him to sleep on in his crate. I also put a blanket rolled up along the side. If you use a blanket down in there he might get confused with it being like a wee pad since he is so small. But you have to take them out to pee pretty much during the night you don't leave him in there all night long to the next morning. At first I got up with him like 1 1/2- 2 hours. He woke me up. He then worked his way up. You have to listen for them. They should wake you up with a bark or something if not you need to get him up and take him to the wee pads. My puppy is 16 weeks old today and he goes from 8:30 p.m. to 3:45 a.m. at least that is what is was today. So they get better at it. It does take time and patience. I hope this helps. Susan |
I'm going to try the shirt with the smell but I'll use her daddy's shirt since she's in love with him LOL!! I did put a blanket in the crate with her its a fleece blanket but she went on it. So last night I took it out. I woke up to her crying at about 330 this morning but she had already went so what I did was grab her bed that she is in all day and put it next to my bed and she slept the rest of the morning. I'm just afraid because eventually I want her to go outside.. |

She isn't doing well in the xpen because she pee's everywhere but the weewee pad that really isn't my concern because I can clean that up my only concern is that she pee's in the crate I put her in at night. I know she is only 9 weeks thats why I'm asking for help as to what I should do... I feel like she is getting confused to where her bed is. I just spoke with my vet and she suggested I put the bed she lays in during the day in the crate that way she knows thats her bed...Also she mentioned I should wake at about 3am to take her out and do her business since she can't hold it in so long. I'm gonna try that first and see. |
I keep Daisy's crate, open, inside the x-pen at night and during the day when I can't be there so she has access to her pee pad and her food as well. I got her a style of crate that is plastic and the top comes off so it can be padded with blankets for a cozy bed. When going out I put the top on so she can't get out. This semms to be working well. I also have the x-pen adjusted so it is smaller then open to full size. It is about 2 feet by 4 feet, so this way if she has an accident, it is in a smaller area! She does well with peeing but not as good with the pooping. I find it everywhere but when I see her poop it is on the pad but when I come home from work, it is everywhere...could she be playing with it???? Ewww..she has plenty of toys! |
I would be afraid that if you put her bed in the crate, she will poop and/or pee in the corner of the crate. |
Well the crate I have is more like a kennel not to big. So what I'm going to try is putting the bed in there and leaving door open and still give her access to the food and weewee pad. Hopefully that works cross fingers. I just have to wash out the kennel really good I have a spray from woolite that they make for pets thats really good for the odor and so that the dogs dont smell where they once went. |

As for playing with poop~that is probably what your pup is doing. If she is not eating it already she most likely will start if you don't nip it quickly. Add a little pumpkin or feed a little pineapple to change that taste of the poop to get her to stop. This is very effective and will address the issue of both playing and eating poop. This can become a disgusting habit if not stopped quickly. |
http://www.qualitysupply.com/images/...ets_porter.jpg This is what I have.... And this is what she stays in when I'm not home.. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...500_AA280_.jpg In that play yard is her cushion bed/food/weewee pad/toys... Its not so big as picture because I minimized it for her... |

I have not heard anyone talk about Woolite pet cleaner before. I use this for the occasional accident. Also, if she is peeping on her bed you need to use an enzyme cleaner of that as well. Just washing in the wash machine is not sufficiant because they will be able to still smell the odor of the urine. Pet Stain & Odor Remover: Nature's Miracle Stain & Odor Remover at PETCO |
Well I don't want to confine her into the kennel so young so that is why I leave her in the play yard while I'm at work. My problem is the kennel at night. She isn't use to it during day she use to her cushion bed so I figure I can just put either bed in kennel OR put the blanket thats on the cushion in the kennel so she can smell that its hers |
Thank you so much. So I woke up last night twice once at 1:30 because I heard her walking around and again at like 3:30... Well she pooped n pee'd but now my dilemma is that she is missing COMPLETELY the weewee pad.. Everyone is saying I shouldnt expect to much from her so I'll hang tight until she learns. I'm enrolling her in puppy education at Petsmart. What are your reviews on it. Is it a waste of money? |
You should NOT take your puppy out of the house and into places like Petsmart or for that matter anywhere there are other dogs until she has had her full series of shots. You will risk the chance of her catching PARVO and that would kill her. Parvo can be found anywhere there are other dogs and it is devistating deadly! :( The bacteria can live for months on floors and in grass so please be very careful. I wouldn't even put her on the ground at the vet when you take her in for her routine shots. Now after all of her shots are finished Petsmart would be fine for a puppy class. :) It sounds like she is doing well learning to go potty. Keep up the good work. |
She goes for all the rest of her shots on Feb 16th.. Petsmart won't take her until she has her ful shots anyway. But thanks for the advice. |
Wee Wee Pads Training I use the crate at night beside my bed that way I hear my little buddy and get him up and take him straight to the pen to the wee pads and he uses it really good. Glad to hear he went in the pen instead of the crate at least this sounds like what you were saying. Congrats on that. I also leave my little buddy in the pen with a little bed, toys, water, food and the wee pads. I was afraid to put the crate in there and leave it open because I was afraid he might jump up on the crate and out of the pen. As for the Petsmart thing. I have also signed up for these classes because I have had a time with him nipping us, biting and barking alot at this time. I think he is playing but he gets so rough and bites us all till we bleed sometimes. But like you said they will not take them until you can show proof of having all the shots. Mine also loved to eat his poop. I ended up buying some stuff to put on it and this lady who her father use to be a vet said that he must be missing some vitamin of some sort so I bought him a multivitamin to take. He finally got over it but he is back at it again. It does take alot of patience with them. I believe mine was taken away too soon from the parents and brothers etc. I got him at 8 weeks. He is now 16 weeks. As for the wee wee pads I also bought a plastic thing to put one in and I also have several others pads around it. So all of this is to one side of my pen. Then I have the little bed and this basket thing with his toys in it and the water/food bowls over on the other side. I also give him a treat everytime he goes on the pads. I leave the gate open for him to go in and out when I am at home and can watch him otherwise he stays in there when I can't supervise him. When I notice him sniffing on the floor I will say go in there to potty. If I catch him in time he goes right on in there and does his business. I hope this has been some help. I can't wait until I can get him outside to use the bathroom. It is just so cold right now and he doesn't know what to make of the leash.....so I am hoping the classes will help. I might take him outside tomorrow if it is warm and see what he does. My problem now is he has figured out how to cauk his leg up and sometimes it goes everywhere even outside of the pen off the wee wee pads. I am having a hard time finding some really thick kind to hold all of the pee he does. I try changing them but I have to do it when someone takes him out of the room because he gets mad when I change them. My husband said he has marked his territory and he doesn't want you to mess with them...isn't that something. You would think he would like to have a clean place to pee. Again I hope this helps in some way....it does get frustrating but hang in there. Try doing the treats everytime she goes on the pads. Buddy just loves the praise that I give him and he expects a treat when he does it. He will come running over to me and looks at me like ok..... If I can help any more just let me know. I will try. I am learning as well. Good Luck with your little girl. |
Good Morning All, I wanted to give you guys some updates on how my weekend went with my little princess. So Friday night. I had susanldm advice in mind. I put her right next to my bed. Only thing I didnt do was put her in the kennel what I did was put her in her bed that she sleeps with during the day. Its like I had an alarm clock everytime I heard her move I'd wake up.. So I woke up at about 2am took her out to the pen to do potty she did it. I was so proud. Then off to bed again. Then again at 7am on Saturday she tinkled then off to bed again. Wasn't til yesterday since it was such a beautiful day out we took her outside to the yard. There is a dog next door to me that was there and she was just so happy to have a friend. She actually went poopy.. I wasn't personally there because I had to run errands but hey my boyfriend took pictures LOL!! So since I'm on sequence I wake up for her without having to put her in the kennel. Tonight I'm gonna try to put her in the kennel but keep her near my bed of course and continue to wake up to take her out. What do you guys think? Am I doing everything good so far? Have in mind this is my very first puppy and I'm just so eager to have her learn.. :animal-pa:animal-pa:aimeeyork Also I like to add I enrolled her in puppy education in Petsmart I can't wait to go to our very first class.:p |
