Yah . My husband says it sounds like he's choking. I'm just glad i know what it is so i'm not as worried. |
This must be a common trait of toy breeds, besides my two doing this occasionally (Ruby more often than Reno), I've had rescues reverse sneeze too, a Japanese Chin, a papillon and chihuahuas. I think it's more disturbing to me than it is to them, and I would love to know why they do it. |

a few of mine does that also... |
My vet says this is a condition common in small breeds. He says it is a collapsing trachea and as they get older if it becomes severe it can be surgically corrected. Both of my girls have the condition and I know it is very common in Boston Terriers as well. When either of the girls have an episode we rub her throat and talk quietly to her to get her to calm down and it clears up very quickly. It seems to occur when they get very excited, which also includes playing hard then drinking too fast because they are so wound up. Apparently rubbing thier throat and soothing them helps them to relax those muscles faster so the episode can stop. It never becomes and issue unless they canoot control it to the point it makes them unable to breath. |
Nicole, my Rosi does this also, rubbing her throat dont do anything for her, but if i cover her nose it does  |

It sounds like the noise my girls make and thats what the vet diagnosed it as...... i absoultely could be wrong though....... |
Lilly does this too... however, I really think it bothers her. It scares her, even when I try to remain calm and soothe her. I think she has a lot of sinus problems anyway though, she's always snorting when she plays and when she's sleeping she snores sooo loud. |

Tinkerbell does this too, she does have congestion/sinus problems. I always feel horrible for her but the vet assures me it is a mild irritation for her and she always recovers from it quickly. They did tell me that if it becomes consistent and hampers her breathing and she begins to not be able to recover quickly that we may have to look at surgery Collapsed Trachea vs. Reverse Sneezing here is an article i found about both conditions, it helped me some to distinguish the two after reading all of this. either way I hate when my babies have episodes, it makes me feel so bad for them |
What you said is true, but often the sound they make with each sounds somewhat the same. If it continues for any significant length of time I go to the vet, it jsut cost me $24.00 or sometimes they don't charge for just reassuring you. That is comforting to me. |
