Yorkie urine?
 

I HAVE THIS WONDERFUL DOG. I WILL TAKE IT OUT AND HE GOES, BUT WHEN I AM ON THIS COMPUTER OR THE PHONE I GET THE SMELL OF URINE AND I LOOK AT THE HOO HOO AND IT'S WET. HE IS 8 MONTHS AND NEUTERED AT 5 MTHS. WHAT DO I DO. I HAVE WHITE RUGS NEVER SEE A STAIN,
BUT WHEN I ASK HIM WHAT DID YOU DO HE BENDS DOWN AND WALKS SLOWLY TO A TABLE. HE KNOWS THAT HE DID WRONG. AND HE WET TO PROVE IT. THIS DOG CAN GO 5 HOURS IN A ROOM without A TINKLE, BUT AFTER HE'S WALKED AND TINKLED HE WILL STILL GO ON THE RUG. ITS THE DOG OR ME AND I DO NOT HAVE $$ TO HAVE HIM TRAINED ANY IDEAS??? THANKS FOR YOUR HELP/YOU HAVE BEEN WONDERFUL TO ME I IN THE PAST.

Has he ever been paper trained or do you use puppy pads at all in the house?

I also have a pup who just insists on going inside. My compromise with him has been to just teach him to use puppy pads in the house in a litter box.

So, if I were you I would start by lining your house with puppy pads: 3-4 in every room. When he is loose (have you been crate training him at all? IMHO, potty training is almost impossible otherwise.) watch him like a HAWK. When you see him starting to stiff and circle, take him immediately to one of the pads and tell him to "go potty." When he eliminates, praise him and give him a treat.

As he starts to learn where it's "ok" to go in the house, you can start to decrease the pads until there is a designated spot or two where it's ok for him to go. This way, if he needs to eliminate between outside potty breaks, he isn't going all over your floors.

Just a thought ... is he urinating pretty frequently indoors? You might consider having him tested for any bladder issues, like an infection. Even when my Oscar was really little he didn't go more than once every 45 minutes or so.

Good luck ... this part of their training can be so frustrating.

Ah ... forgot to add ... dogs have really short memories when they are young. Three seconds after your guy pees, he has probably forgotten he's done it. So when you scold him later he does realize your angry (hence the slinking away) but most likely doesn't know why. Unless you catch him in the physical act of peeing on your floor, don't scold him.

Chloe, is trained to bark at the door and i let him out, no need for the pads. i think he pees for spite. I do catch him sometimes, but its right after he went outside. it's like he is getting even when i am doing something that doesn't involve him!

I beg to differ actually. I've had my Yorkie for almost a year and a half and by the time he was 3 1/2-4 months old he was house broken and 'Potty' trained. He would go by the door when he wanted to go outside and we'd let him out to do his business and he'd go and come back in when he was done playing outside. He hasn't had an accident in the house since, well there has been the odd excited tinkle on the floor but no major on purpose peeing. Potty training itsn't totally impossible, I guess maybe it depends on the dog, I don't know but my dog was easy to house break. My vet told me that leaving pee pads down in different rooms in the house was just going to confuse my dog because thats what I was going to do with him but she said that by doing that it would take a lot longer to house break him.

My adivce, don't give up on taking him outside, he'll learn evenutally or if he doesn't and continues to pee in the house then litter train him.

Sorry if my post was misleading ... I wasn't trying to imply that potty training in itself was impossible ... but rather that without crate training or another method of controlling their environment within the home it can be really, really difficult.

There are quite a few on here who have successfully potty trained their dogs to use the puppy pads as well as to indicate when they want to go out. Maybe they can weigh in on what worked for them.

Oscar just turned 4 months, and with the exception of the very rare accident, he is totally potty trained to go in a litter box. I live in a second story apartment where it is freeeeezing in the winter and spend long hours in my office on campus, so it seemed to be the best, (and most fair for the pup) method for us.

There are several options as far as training, so I suppose each of us must evaluate what works the best for us and our little ones' personalities.

I now have 3 Yorkies. 7, 8 and 9 mo. None of the three were crated. The 7 month old...I just got her last week. She was litter box trained. I knew I wasn't going to keep a litter box for her, so I just take her out frequently, just like I did the boys when they were small. She got the hang of it the second day. Now, when they all go out, I watch them closely, and make sure they go. Sometimes it takes a couple of pees for them to completely empty out their bladders. I don't think he's doing it to spite you, he's probably just got to still pee!

Is he actually peeing because he has to go or is he lifting his leg and marking even though he is fixed?

This I know from experience....because my husband cleans carpets....if your yorkie is smelling urine in the carpet ....even if you've cleaned it well...(it leaks down deep into the pad) he/she will continually urinate in that area....have you used Carpet Enzyme after the puppy has an accident...its really important that after you clean the area real good, that you put enough enzyme on the carpet for the urine smell to be totally eaten up by the bacteria...and that will take a couple days to dry....... We took my little yorkie and my sisters yorkie to a friends house...who had several dogs and they obviously had pottied on the carpet...and both of our yorkies started to potty on their carpets......even though they had just been taken out. Once you use the enzyme on those areas...I would cover them with a towel or something just so that the enzyme has time to eat up the odors....And after treated the puppy won't smell the urine in the carpet anymore....Now if you've already used Carpet Enzyme each time......then sadly I don't know what else could be the problem..........So hope this has helped!
