Allergies?
 
I am looking for any input that may help with my poor little boy that has allergies, to what I do not know. We have his scratching some what under control, but he now has a problem around his penis area. He gets a bumpy rash and licks that area quite a bit, some times making the rash worse. He is not his self when going through a period of this. The vet says its allergies and gives him a shot. It does clear up and then returns a few weeks or so later. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome! I am dealing with allergies at this very moment. Hot Rod has yeast in ears and has been scratching ever since we've had him in December 07. My 1st vet test for ringworm, negative. Got a 2nd opinion in meantime and she had given 3 meds and shampoo. The meds seem clear up itch and he didn't have as much flaking and his coat was shinier. The unfortunate thing though is that he is such a picky eater--his tummy got upset from the liquid medication and we stopped everything for 2 days. His itching and flakiness are back. I am slowly giving him 2 of the meds to see if his allergies get better. We will shampoo him at end of week since he was neutered a week ago and didn't want to give him a bath just yet. He didn't have any rash or any spots but because of the constant allergy, vet said she was seeing possible start of staph infection. Hopefully he will get some relief after going back on his meds today.

You may know this already, but if you have an itchy baby its better to go several weeks between baths. I'd drag it out as long as you can.

He's been bathed once a month since we've had him. The shampoo says to bath 2x week for so long then once a month. It's a medicated shampoo from the vet.

Oh my, it could be SO many things. Is there a lot of corn in his kibble?

Do you put the good smelly powder on your floor? (A BIG cause for this).

Do you have an automatic air freshener being sprayed ANYWHERE near him?

Do you use Fabreeze?

Do you use fabric softener on his blankets?

Ok, you probably see where I'm going with this. What I would do if it were me...

Not get the shots for a while. Bath him and rinse him really REALLY well. IF you have used the powder on the carpet, vac it and shampoo it. Make sure to rinse it several times. IF you have used good smelly stuff on your furniture, shampoo it also. IF there is a lot of corn in his food, do a slow change-over to a better brand (corn makes Yorkies itchy). If licking himself has become a bad habit due to the rash, put an e-collar on him for a while. I'd hold a cool wash cloth on his little "privates" to help ease the irritation.

I had same problem and the answer was as simple as find yourself a dog kibble with no grain........there are a lot now just read read read the lable,corn is the worst offender but dogs do not need GRAIN in their food........

Thanks so much for the helpful hints I will certainly check my foods to eliminate any corn products as well as grains. I did switch over to a natural dog food. I also think he gets into the habit of scratching when he doesn't always itch. Compulsive behavior:confused: :confused: He is certainly better than a few years ago it was a cronic problem, lots of hair loss. Now its around his belly area. :confused:

I learned natural does not mean no grain and also check any treats you give him to make sure there is no unwanted ingred. like weird dies or preservatives.I found that the less i changed Dukes diet the healthier he stayed.Also if his skin is dry a little olive oil on his food is also good....

I feed Eagke Pack Holistic Select....it is WONDERFUL and they love it! The ingredients are amazing. If only I were as selective with MY OWN food:p !

Thank you for the possible solutions. You know come to think about it I did start using Fabreeze not long ago. I did spray it on my carpet in areas. I would put my money on it that may be the cause of the belly irratation.

Well, PLEASE stick around and let us know if it gets all cleared up after doing some carpet and furniture shampooing. Trust me, there is plenty of reading and wonderful pictures on YT to keep you busy until you can give us an update:D . I will keep checking in to see how its going;)

I have three yorkies one of which has a lot of medical problems. We have found that he is allergic to most of the flea tick meds from the vet except for Frontline. He looses patches of his hair and breaks out in a rash. Grass is another problem. He gets welp like things on him when he is out for very long. He is also allergic to cheese. lol As soon as he eats the least little bit of stuff with cheese he gets sick. One thing to check also is the dog thyroid. The thyroid can cause many different things. On my male he has a permenant bald spot due to low thyroid.
