breeding - need help Hi Everyone! I am in the Richmond, Va area. I own a purebred CKC registered yorkie boy. He is 10 months old and weighs 15 pounds. No, he is not overweight - just big bones.....big everything. I am trying to decide if I should breed him because of his size. Of course I will need to find a "big yorkie girl" in order for them to be able to breed together. I spoke with my vet about breeding him....he thinks I will have a difficult time finding a girl that will be able to breed with him. He also thinks I will have a difficult time - no one wants a large yorkie....only little bitty. I really want to breed Bailey...he is beautiful...athletic, funny, good personality, gentle....etc..... Should I give up the idea of breeding Bailey? |
Not to be mean, but I believe only dogs within the standards should be bred and at 15 pounds he is more than twice the standard. |
I agree with Lacy's Mom and your vet. Not only will you have a very hard time finding someone you could breed him to, but then you are producing even more puppies that won't be within the breed standard. |
do not breed him |
To Breed Or Not? I really want to breed Bailey...he is beautiful...athletic, funny, good personality, gentle....etc..... Your description fits most Yorkshire Terriers; it does not condone breeding a non-standard dog. Neuter him and enjoy him as he is. If you wish another large or oversize Yorkie, you can easily find one, as breeders will not keep them. Also, should you have a litter of oversize pups, you will find that most buyers want small ones. I would not consider a Yorkie over seven pounds, even though I do not breed or show. I like my dogs looking like the breed they are! |
