R.I.P. Toby :(
 

On Sunday May 12th, 2013 Toby passed on. He had a short but very happy and loving life while he was with us.

Unfortunately Toby was born with a heart condition pulmonic stenosis....could not operate as the vet felt he would not survive the operation. When we found out about his condition I immediately contacted the breeder to advise of the situation and advise that if she continues to breed this could happen to another owner.....all calls went unanswered. The vet gave Toby a year to a year and a half to live, he made it to 13 months and 12 days sadly.

I am extremely sad that Toby is not with us today however I know that the life we were able to provide him was very very loving!! Toby was the very first yorkie I have ever had the pleasure to be a mommy too, just wish our time together could have been longer.

What a cutie. I came extremely close to losing my beloved Minnie that exact day, and she did end up dying the following Sunday. I know it's so rough for both of us losing somebody who meant so much to each of us. Just stay strong and think of the good times (I know there must have been so many looking at those sweet eyes of Toby's) and I will try to do the same.

These precious angels sure do have a way of quickly stealing our hearts, and that makes it so much more difficult when we lose them. How wonderful that the time Toby did have with you was filled with love.

I recently lost my baby October, so I feel your pain. No amount of time with our furbabies will ever be enough and when they leave - it is so hard. My heart goes out to you during this difficult time.

I cannot help but believe that our yorkies are in dog heaven waiting for us. So heartbreaking to see them go.

I'm so sorry you had to go through this, and that your baby had to suffer. I really urge you to name the breeder who caused this and did not give a damn about it. Also please check to see if you have puppy lemon laws in your state, many states do, and protect against dogs that have congenital defects, which this certainly was.

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts!! It really has been tough not having him around to cuddle.

Question for those that have lost a yorkie....when did you feel like you were ready for another one? I keep debating just because of the horrible experience we had with the breeder of Toby and also keep thinking we only had 10 months with the little guy and just miss him terribly. I know another can not replace the bond I had with him. So, I need some kind advise. Thank you!

That's such a hard question to answer. My Minnie died on May 20th and I miss her so deeply; she really was my greatest friend in the world, probably the greatest friend I ever had. I know a lot of people will look at you like you're nuts if you say that about a dog, but I really mean it when I tell how much Minnie means to me. As she got older I dreaded the inevitable May 20th so much, not knowing how I would ever get by without her. And it is indeed lonely. My family and my friends have been great, but I still feel deeply wounded without her scratching at my leg, jumping onto my chest, begging for snacks, and so on.

But I'm starting to look right now at rescue sites to see if I find anyone I have to meet. I'm not looking for anyone to replace my Minnie, as that would be impossible and a ridiculously high standard to hold anyone too. Still, life is too short to not open my heart to another yorkie, and I'd like to have another within the next couple of months. Still not certain if I'm going rescue or puppy yet. But I'm getting to the point that I want another loyal companion. I'll probably give it another week at least before I start seriously contacting breeders though, because the thought of getting another dog would have been unthinkable to me just a week ago. I guess I want to give some time to make absolutely sure I'm ready before I start seriously discussing things with breeders and rescue organizations. One thing I do hope is I can find one even half as cute as your Toby. RIP to the special little guy and hugs to you jhess in this difficult time for the two of us.

I'm so sorry, what a sad thing to happen. I wouldn't hesitate to look for another puppy anytime you're ready. We had a boxer given to us a few years ago. He hadn't been fed well before he came to us and developed terrible bladder stones. I was able to keep him alive for a year with herbs and changing his diet to raw until it just got so bad that I didn't want him to suffer. Initially when we found out that surgery wouldn't resolve the problem, thought we'd have to put him down right away. My husband had compassion on me and bought me a puppy so putting him down wouldn't be so hard on me. It was a wonderful shock when I found out I could use the herbs to help him but I wasn't prepared for 2 males! We had no idea how long he would live and were so fortunate he lived a year longer so the pup had time to grow up. Yes, such a sad day when they go.
