His "Big Sister" left him...

This past summer we had to have (Muffin) our 14 year old (collie shepherd) put to sleep, since then, the very day my husband put her in the car and left, our 6 year old teacup Yorkie "Chilly" has been listless, over-eating, just laying in his bed looking out of his window, still happy to see us when we came home, but just not the same. I wanted to get another puppy right away, but everyone told me to give him some time to grieve her. I couldn't stand it any longer, about a week and 1/2 ago, after searching for her, I found another puppy! It was one of those things where as soon as I saw her picture I knew my search was over, but she was in Ohio & we're in Michigan 3 &1/2 hours away, Now I'm not one to travel for a dog, but like I said, I knew this was "her". She's a Black & Tan, with white paw's, and a white breast in front, just beautiful! Oh yeah (A Mini-Aussi-Shepherd), and she was the runt of an unexpected litter. I couldn't wait to get her for Chilly, I thought, finally he'll get some exercise, and be happy not to be alone all day while we work, And she would be just a bit smaller thna him, so he could be the big brother. Chilly is almost exactly the sams age Muffin was when we got him. Of course I have one of those husband's that think dog's cost around $10, so yes, I lied...she was really $575, and the lady was nice enough to write out an actual receipt stuck in with her papers & a fake one for $150. We went to get her, it will be 2 week's tomorrow since we've had her. Her name is "Holly" and Chilly seem's to HATE her! A couple of times out in the yard (wher HE feel's like it) they will run, jump, and chase eachother, it's only happened a few times though, did I do a bad thing? I would hate to have made him from sad to angry. It's usually inside the house when he's snippy & protecting his territory. I thought this would be a great thing, the vet said he had put on 2&1/2lbs. since Muffin Died & that was NOT healthy for a Tea-cup! The vet said give it time it sometimes takes awhile for them to adjust to eachother, he also said as she grows, it would get better. She's supposed to be about 13" and approx 17 - 20 lbs., right now she weighs about 3 lbs. Can anyone out there who bought a new puppy while having another for it to come home to help me? Is it too soon for me to expect bonding, all she does is jump all over him wanting to play, like a puppy! Can some help me with some personal stories of thier own...Please...! I've attached a Picture of Chilly w/ Muffin & Chilly & Holly, thank you for any answer's. Sherri

i have been there

i just bought Yoda home a month ago today because my Yorkie Roxy passed away September 28 of this year. I have 5 other dogs and a cat, but only 1 of my dogs and my cat are inside. It took honestly until yesterday for my peek a poo Buddy to warm up to him, and my cat just kinda looks at him and occasionally will swat at him. My cat was REALLY depressed when Roxy passed. he always meowed, and looked at the steps for her to come up. I wanted Yoda because I longed for Roxy, I needed her but couldn't have her, and two my cat Bingo needed a friend again. Although he pretty much ignores Yoda right now he isn't always mean to him like he was in the beginning. I stopped forcing Yoda and Bingo to play with each other, It kinda happens on it's own... give it time. It will happen. Dont give up just yet!

No regrets

Hi. It will take time, but even if Chilly is resenting Holly, at least she is getting his mind off of Muffin. Eventually he will grow more accepting of her, and will become best buddies. Just give them time, and split your attention between them, so neither feels left out. Also allow Chilly his own space and time with you. It will all come together in the end.

We got Nala at the beginning of this summer so Bandit could have a friend. At first Bandit was VERY resentful and he would nip at her ears and ignore her and want nothing to do with her. Now they are best friends and play together all the time. When Bandit gets sick of her he'll just jump up on the couch where she can't get to him. I'm so glad we got her and Bandit is too:) Keep a positive outlook and give them many positive interactions with each other. I'm sure in time he'll be happy he has a playmate again:)

When an animal dies or has to be put to sleep or a person dies any animals, especially dogs, need to see that animal or person once they have died. They seem to understnad what has happened and no longer go looking for the other animal or person.

Sometimes I think that puppies just have bad doggy manners. Maybe he is just trying to correct her and things will work out just fine as she grows and matures. At least I hope so! Good luck!

When I brought Baxter home at 13 weeks (yorkie) my Lhasa Zeke who was 5 hated him. I mean HATED him. Zeke took 3 MONTHS! before he would go into the same room as Baxter. Then when he started being in the same room, Zeke refused to look at him. He would actually look and turn in the other direction is the baby came into his vision line. Well about 5 months in, I saw Zeke actually play with Baxter for about 5 minutes! Now Baxter just turned two and Zeke is almost 7, they play every day, they lay together, and Zeke is soooooo afraid that Baxter is going to get extra attention, they race each other all the time, to see who gets loved first.
Baxter was so good for Zeke, it brought out the playfulness in him again. I would do it all over again, but pray it wouldn't take so long.
So you are actually doing well if it is less than 2 weeks and they play occasionally. GOOD LUCK! :)

I brought Maggie home when Buster was 11 months old. That was a year ago. He still does not like her. He tolerates her. Both are Yorkies, Maggie weighs about 1 lb. more than Buster. They chase each other around the yard, they play together...sometimes. They race each other to see who is going to be the first to give kisses when we come home. She will sit in the house in front of the dog door and not let him in. I caught him doing it to her yesterday. She will sit on the stairs and not let him come upstairs, he will sit at the bottom of the stairs and whine. I hope in time, they will become better friends. However, finding another home for Maggie is out of the question. This has been suggested to me. I love both of them and give them both equal time. Actually I think he probably gets more time! I refuse to part with either of them. :aimeeyork :aimeeyork

I brought Colt home when he was 10 weeks old. Marley had been the only dog for about 5 months. She was so resentful and would not even let me or my DH touch her. She would sleep under the couch , something she had never done before. We let her start sleeping in the bed with us so she still felt loved. It took about a month for them to get along. He would chase her everywhere and she would want him to leaver her alone. Now they sleep together in a bed on the floor next to DH and mines bed. All snuggled and cuddled together. They even share bully sticks ( they each take an end and chew together ) and Marley will go to the food bowl, grab a piece of kibble for her and come back and drop the 2nd piece of kibble in front of Colt , as to say " Here buddy I got some for you too!" It's too precious.
I would give them time. I almost thought about rehoming Colt because Marley was so resentful and mean to him. I am glad I did not , because they are Best Friends Forever now, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Colt even licks Marleys ear when they lay next to each other for minutes at a time and she loves it, she falls asleep to him grooming her which I find odd because she is older. I guess he is just showing her the "big sister respect" she deserves :)
