A Little Girl's Letter to God: Is My Dog in Heaven? I don't know who originally started this story, but this touched my heart so I wanted to share it with everyone here and I hope it helps to ease the pain of your losses... Our 14-year-old dog, Abbey, died last month. The day after she died, my 4-year-old daughter, Meredith, was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to Heaven, God would recognize her. I told her that I thought we could so she dictated these words: Dear God, Will you please take care of my dog? She died yesterday and is with you in Heaven. I miss her very much. I am happy that you let me have her as my dog even though she got sick. I hope you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and to swim. I am sending a picture of her so when you see her, you will know that she is my dog. I really miss her. Love, Meredith We put the letter in an envelope with a picture of Abbey and Meredith and addressed it to 'God/Heaven'. We put our return address on it. Then Meredith pasted several stamps on the front of the envelope because she said it would take lots of stamps to get the letter all the way to Heaven. That afternoon she dropped it into the letter box at the post office. A few days later, she asked if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch addressed to Meredith in an unfamiliar hand. Meredith opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers called, 'When a Pet Dies' Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God in its opened envelope. On the opposite page was the picture of Abbey & Meredith and this note: Dear Meredith, Abbey arrived safely in Heaven. Having the picture was a big help. I recognized Abbey right away. Abbey isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me just like it stays in your heart. Abbey loved being your dog. Since we don't need our bodies in Heaven, I don't have any pockets to keep your picture in, so I am sending it back to you in this little book for you to keep and have something to remember Abbey by. Thank you for the beautiful letter and thank your mother for helping you write it and send it to me. What a wonderful mother you have. I picked her especially for you. I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I'm easy to find, I am wherever there is love. Love, God |

I've read this too and I love that some stranger went out of their way to be so kind for someone else! :) What a beautiful story! One worth saving and re-reading to any child that has a problem with a pet that has been lost. |
What a wonderful thing to happen for that little girl. She will have her faith with her forever. Thank you so much for sharing this terrific story. |
That is so great and touching. My daughter is having a hard time with Stormy's death and asks often of Jesus will let Stormy come back because she misses her so much :(:( |
I've read that before and it is still as heartwarming and touching as the first time l read it. |
Losing someone you love is always hard, but because their love is so genuine and their hearts are so innocent and pure it's even harder on the little ones! It breaks my heart every time I hear about a child losing their pets. From experience I know that they are often their only friend, playmate and confidant with whom they can speak freely about their feelings - their whole world in a nutshell... A few months ago, I stumbled onto this site by accident. We had just moved into our new house and our Spikie took to it immediately! He loved it more than we did I think! We started working with our YorkiePoos right away to teach them how to get out of the pool in case they fell in... After a couple of months of careful supervision and testing their reactions in the pool, we felt confident that they would be fine and once again, Spikie and his side kick, Gypsy, had full run of our house - inside and out! He was a regular Officer Ommaley! He loved his title of Senior Grounds Patrol Officer and did his little job with pride... One morning I woke up and looked out our bedroom doors to see him floating in the pool and Gypsy racing around in circles around the pool... (My original post after finding this awesome site is: My Dear Spike - Daddy is so sorry...) I know how much the loss of your favorite pet hurts! Summer is almost over and I can finally use our pool without creating one of my own... One thing that helped all three of us so much (Gypsy, my wife and I) was going and getting another puppy within a few days! Some people say no to that - I say YES! I was boarderline suicidal from the overwhelming guilt of him drowning less than 10 feet away from where I had been just lying in bed awake for better than an hour that morning! Our little Spike, "Junior", was a genuine Godsend!! And ironicly, he is living up to his namesake as he has much of Spike's personality but yet they and Gypsy are night and day! Good luck and God bless... And maybe... Just maybe... Jesus has been hunting for just the right puppy that would be "Perfect" for her all this time... |
Awww that is the greatest!!! |
