My Buddy Died I am a new member who just lost my beloved Buddy in February. It was so sudden-- I took him to the vet for teeth cleaning. My Buddy had some progressive renal disease but was only 9 years old. One of my other yorkies, the same age, did just fine, he is healthier. The vet checked lab work on Buddy and did "cold laser" (sounds like voodoo to me) therapy to his kidneys for a week before the appointment. Buddy died as the vet was inducing anesthesia, cardiac arrest(from drug overdose I would suspect) to clean his teeth! I was being a good yorkie mom, keeping my dog's teeth clean, and lost him as a result. I haven't gotten past my anger yet. Why didn't the vet just tell me my Buddy was too sick to have anesthesia any more? To just pad her own wallet? I never knew I could feel such pain at the loss of an animal. As fate would have it, I had just adopted a shelter yorkie at Christmas time, so I still have a pair of them. My shelter yorkie is coming along well despite her start in a puppymill; her progress helps me keep my sanity during my grieving time. |
I'm so sorry about your loss. I know it must be really hard to lose a pet. When I was growning up, We had to put down our great dane because she had a tumor and the vet said they couldn't do anything that would save her life. :( I will keep you in my prayers. |
I know how hard this is on you.. and the anger.. for I lost two 5 year olds also.. one by a vet and one to a fall..I am still angry at times 5 years later at a vet being as stupid as the one I was going to was that fateful day.. I feel bad for you as I know this feeling.. sending you a big hug.. anne |
So sorry. In January we had to put our shellsea down due to complications with old age. It is still difficult for me. You were being good mommy it wasn't your fault. Hugs! |

I lost my cat baby Dec. 17 2006. I raised her on a bottle, she was 21 years old. I wanted to die also. That is why I got Chance, I needed something to help me with the pain of losing my baby. Chance got her name because I was taking a chance that she would help me. I know it is difficult to lose a pet, they are our babies. I will never get over losing Tiger. I'm so sorry for you. |
You were being a good mom. I am so sorry for your loss |

Poor Buddy Hello: I feel your pain over the loss of little Buddy as I lost my furbaby to kidney disease late last year. It was very sudden and unexpected, and I was devastated. It seems very strange that the vet, knowing of the kidney trouble, still went ahead with the teeth cleaning procedure. He should have known that the renal problem could make it more difficult to process the anesthetic drugs. I know that it was probably the anesthesia for tooth cleaning that was too much for my little one's kidneys, as it was only 2 weeks after that that she died. However, she was not diagnosed with the kidney disease until she later became very sick. I comfort myself a little by thinking that she did have a serious kidney issue and that she would only have become worse with time. The anesthesia just hastened the inevitable. We can only know that we did what we thought was right for our pet at the time and that they were loved very much. Buddy is at peace now and you probably saved him from much more misery from the kidney disease. |
