Should I buy him
 

Hi I am new to the board and have a question.

I heard though a friend that someone has a Yorkie they need to rehome. I asked why they needed to rehome him and they said that he barked to much and he did not seem to want to potty train for them so they want to rehome him. They are asking for about a 1/4 of what they paid for him. I love Yorkies but I am very nervous about being able to potty train him. I am also not sure how to discourage the barking. He is AKC registered and she has all his shots up to date. He was at the vet last week and got a clean bill of health. The house is nice and clean and he seems happy. He is 7 months old. I am a single mom with a calm teenage high functioning special needs child. I work during the day while my son is at school.

My son and I went to the house to see the dog and he came up to me and sat right on my lap. and seemed to like my son also. I am not sure what to do, she says if we feel he is not the right fit for us she will take him back. I am supposed to call her tomorrow and let her know if we are interested or not. Also we have no other pets at this time.

Hi, Welcome to YT! Sorry no one had replied sooner! Sometimes, folks don't see things in our Regional forums as quickly as the General Forum, so I'm going to try & address some of what you said & bump this up & hopefully someone else will see it & give you a bit more help.

First let me tell you that I adopted 2 yorkies who were almost 1 1/2 yrs old - basically because the owner had a new baby & was overwhelmed & Roxy was jealous of the baby. But they did have some housebreaking issues - they really didn't say hey, I have to go out. So I did have to work on this some.

A lot of the housebreaking issue, is with the owner, not the dog. You have to pay attn to their signs that they need to go, once you learn those it helps big time. But also you can do a lot to help the situation, take him out frequently. Praise him big time when he goes outside - some people even use rewards like a Cheerio or little training treat.

You could also try crate training - I'm a huge believer in this, but it may be difficult if this guy is not use to a crate. Or you could use an X-pen to give him more room to roam & a safe place to put him when you have other things you need to do.

You can search on here for more info with housebreaking. Some folks have even trained their dogs to ring bells near a door to notify of the need to go out.

One of the YT members is saving a dog's life today from a kill shelter that is nearly a yr old & spent its life in a cage - she's willing to take him on, I'm sure you can work with one that has been a house pet.

I don't know much about curbing barking - search for that here on YT &/or hopefully others will give you some good info about that.

I understand your anxiety about bringing an adult dog into your home. I had a great deal of concern, even though I used to breed Bichons & Siamese cats - I had always brought new pups or kittens into my house. I found with Bubba & Roxy the best thing was they needed love & attention. They were happy with me almost immediately, even though I was afraid to get too attached because I was afraid their original owner would change her mind.

Hi there! Welcome to YT! We love our new members-so glad you joined us! I think it sounds like a great match for you! Please keep in mind that yorkies are very smart, and sometimes stubborn, which at times can make potty training difficult. But, if you stay consistent with whatever method and rules you use to potty train him, he will get trained. It may take a little longer than other dogs, but the love, companionship, and giggles you get from your yorkie will be worth all the extra time and effort!

Also, I wanted to mention that you could try and train him to potty outside and inside on pee pads. Many yorkie owners offer pads to the dogs to use indoors when it's cold/snowy/rainy out, and when the dogs will be left home alone for a longer period of time.

As far as the barking goes, try leaving a radio or TV on for him while you're gone during the day-I would strongly recommend an x-pen for him rather than a crate. That way you can put in a soft blanket or bed, a pee pad, some water, and some toys to keep him occupied. My two love to be tossed a Kong toy filled with a little peanut butter or cheese right when we leave.

If this is the one off of 33 road I wouldn't get him. I went to look at him today and he has had several injuries from bark collars, and has not yet been neutered. He seems to have problems marking things, and I would say he is definitly not in the standard. I think he seems like a nice dog, but I wouldn't pay what they are asking. They should not be rewarded for their neglect of him.

I have a good feeling about this little one...Id say give it a try..especially if she is willing to take him back if it doesnt work out..but like I said I have a feeling it will work..he is still a baby!!

Yes that is the one, off 33 RD. After I went and talked to her and was thinking of getting him, partly after I realized he had the injuries. ( I felt bad for him and wanted to see the poor little guy in a loving and safe envirnment). Then she said to me, well I want more money for him, another person offered more then we agreed on. I was not happy, but decided not to pay what she wanted. I went back their around 10:00 today. The other lady was supposed to go at 11:00 or so. Was that you aquinn? If it was I am glad you didn't get him. I hope she ends up having to give him away for being so cruel to that little guy and for being so greedy. :mad:

What type of injuries did he have?? Sounds like SOMEONE needs to rescue the poor little thing if he is being so neglected..are they asking way too much or something? I thought the price was really good? I feel bad for this little guy :(

Well, As far as how much they want. The ad in the newspaper said that she wanted 400.00 obo. I called and after talking to her and getting backround info on the pup, I asked if she would take 200.00 for him and if it didn't work out with us would she be willing to take him back. (If I had a pup I needed to rehome, that's what I would want) She originally said yes to the 200.00 and that she would be will to take him back, if we were not the perfect home for him.
So my son and I went to visit, on Tues night. She said she had one other person that called before me and that she wanted them to see the pup also. So I called Wed morning to see if the other person was interested. She then told me he was still available. So we went back over yesterday morning. We talked for a while and my heart melted for that poor little guy and I was going to take him. Then I said are we still in agreement on the price and if things don't work out that I can return him to you? She said, well someone called this morning and said they would pay me the full 400.00, and did not ask if they could return him if things didn't work out.
Needless to say, she would not sell me the pup, unless I was willing to pay more for him then we originally agreed apon.

Oh yeah, her interest is definately for the well being of that pup. By the way the reason I didn't see the sore on his neck the first night, was because he had a little sweater on, she told me she just had both of her pups clipped and he was cold. Also wouldn't the sore have been in the front of his neck, and not on the side of his neck, from a bark collar? I thought they work from the vibration of the vocal chords?
In the end, I can only hope that the pup goes to a really loving home.

Also, as far as the sore on the side of his neck goes, the humane society probably would have just given her a warning. I have delt with them in the past, with a neighbors bitting dog and the dog is still with my neighbors. :confused:
