I like floppy ears better :) Hello, I am new to YorkieTalk and I have A LOT to learn. I am planning on getting a Yorkie sometime in the near future, but I want to do as much reading as I can before I bring a puppy home. With that said, I have a question about ears. I read the FAQ's, and it said that their ears may go up and down at different times due to stress etc., and that you can tape their ears and massage their ears to help them stay up....but I just LOVE LOVE LOVE them with floppy ears. I have seen some full grown Yorkies that still had floppy ears, so I was wondering, is there anything I can do to insure that my Yorkie's ears will stay floppy? If this is in any way unhealthy or bad for them, then of course I will just let the floppy ear thing go, because they are still adorable either way. Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks. -Megan |
One of my husband's best friend's MOM has a yorkie and they preferred his ears down. When their yorkie, Smokey, was a puppy, she literally taped the tips of his ears down. Smokey was a ring bearer at their daughter's wedding...and at 3yrs old, the floppy eared dog looked like a puppy. The dog was about 6.5 pounds, but looked SO much like a puppy still, lol. |
Personally I never understood the big deal with floppy ears. I had to look up that it wasn't some type of defect. My yorkie's ears are standing up but if they started to flop I wouldn't care one bit. One way I hear to make them flop is to let the hair on the back of them grow out. |
4 Attachment(s) I don't how to keep them floppy. TJ has floppy ears and he is 3 months old. They haven't gone up yet, and I don't know if they ever will. My only suggestion is to do the opposite of what you do to make the ears stand up. Many Yorkie owners trim their Yorkie's ear hair so it makes them lighter and the ears stand up. I would suggest (like typerk) to let the hair on the back of it's ear to grow out long and thick as a puppy so it's ears don't stand up. Here are a few pictures of TJ with floppy ears. |
I hear keeping the hair on the back of them helps. i love them floppy eared too. my old puppy bandit had really small ears and had one up and one down. they might have both gone up but he died before we knew. our new puppy tucker has big ears and they look to big and heavy to ever stand up. |
I think they are cute either way but I personally like the ears straight up like they are suppose to be for their breed |
I think they are cute either way but I did read that with floppy ears they are more prone to infection from moisture being trapped. |
ears You will need to buy from parents with flop ears. It is hard to keep ears down if they are genetically erect..flop earred dogs are more prone to ear infections, but with care it isn't a problem. Good luck |
OH MY GOODNESS!!!! TJ IS SOOOOOOO CUTE!!! I am jealous!!! Thanks for the info, good to know I am not the only one that likes floppy ears. How many days/weeks/months should I train them to stay down? (by letting the hair on the back of the puppy's ears grow and taping them down) |
They are cute either way! I loved it when Rocky had one floppy ear! Now, they both stand straight up and he is adorable! I would suggest not messing with mother nature and let your babies ears do whatever they want to do naturally. I have a friend who never trimmed the ears on her puppy and they still stood up on their own. Another friend trimmed, taped and taped more and her baby, who is now 3, still have the floppies! Good luck! You will love your little one no matter what kind of ears she/he has! |

My Daisy is 10 months old now and her ears are floppy. I guess they'd have a chance at being erect if I had them tipped but I love them just the way they are ....nice and floppy! :) |
Floppy Ears I wanted a yorkie so it seemed important at the time to make sure mine had ears that stood up because that's the breed. So, when Chloe's ears flopped back down, I tried various ways to get them up, clipping hair, sprinkling calcium on food, tape. Whether any of this worked or not I don't know but her ears did come up. Lacey's ears were up and stayed up. I agree that it seems floppy ears might encourage infections but for those that have floppy ear dogs without a problem, then that's great. I think I made it too important, it wasn't like I wanted a show dog. |
I have one with the floppy ears and one with straight ones. I like them both it really does not matter to me. |
You are right about that, I will love my baby no matter how his/her ears are! I would really hate to tape them down though, (or even up, Just seems kinda mean). |
