Maddy doesn't like anybody but me My yorkie Maddy doesn't like anyone but me. My hubby is starting to take it personally. He is very gentle with her and has never yelled at her or anything. She doesn't like my kids either. If they come close to her she runs away, but she comes to me. If I hand her to my hubby, she used to fight it, but atleast now she doesn't do that, but you can tell she can't wait to get put down. If he is in bed, she licks his face like crazy, but out of bed it is a different story. Is this normal for the yorkie breed. Somebody told me that they are one person dogs, but I have searched the net about their personalities and have never read that. Hopefully with time this will change. I play with her and my hubby says he wants to play with her like that, but she will not play with him. Other than that, I think she is a perfect dog (well as close to perfect as you can get without being potty trained yet, ha ha). Joan |
I don't know if it's necessarily a yorkie personality. My little Coco adores me, but loves everyone around her. She plays with whomever wants to give her attention, even just for a petting of the belly. Maybe you should let your husband and kids feed her a few days a week, so she sees them as her family too. Just a suggestion, I may not know what I am talking about but it sounds like it would work. :aimeeyork |
I don't really know what the answer is. My Yorkies are one person dogs and family dogs. TJ bonded with me as his mama and Riley bonded with my mom and his mama, but they love my brother and my step dad. Maybe you should just try to get Maddy used to the other members of the family slowly. Like sit on the ground with her and your husband and let them get to know each other while she still feels safe because you are there. When you are holding Maddy, let your kids and your husband pet her so she feels safe in your arms. I hope everything works out! :D |
Our first Yorkie, Mocha, was definitely a momma's girl. If I came into the room, she would get up from a sound sleep & have to be on my lap. If we went out of town, she would not sleep with anyone & would cry thru the first night until I guess she got so tired she would finally sleep. When I would leave on errands & she was outside, she would lay in the driveway until she saw my car. Sometimes I liked it, but sometimes I felt so guilty leaving or moving around the house so much that I would wear her out! (especially as she got holder) The funniest thing was when we would go to bed. She would not let anyone put her in bed but me & if I put her in bed before my husband got in bed, she would growl & bark at him! I thought it was funny, but he didn't too much. ;) Kodah is a little more independent - she lets more people love on her & hold her but really prefers her bed when she is ready to sleep. I think they tend to be partial to one person, but Kodah's proving me wrong! I like her little independent/fiesty spirit! |
You know, I thought when I got two, one would go to me and the other to my hubby, we are both retired. Not so, I feed them, play with them, trained them, take them for car rides and let them kiss me all over my face. They like daddy, but mommy is their first love! |
Hi! I am having the same problem with my little male. I was told that males are more loving and get along with everyone. But, he only wants me. If someone else is holding him and I walk in the room, he will bark, whine or growl at them. He also does not want my kids to come and sit by me, just him. Any suggestions? Shana |
I think each dog has their own personality and will bond with a different person or people depending on their needs and desires. I am Hefner's first love but he will go to anyone, play with anyone and wants to get attention from anyone. Chai likes me and my daughter Amy the best but she also likes my husband. She is more leary about stravnge people and 'clingy' when we are out while Hefner is Mr. Meet 'n Greet! Buddha is very friendly with adults but doesn't care for young children and he is shy and not as social as Hefner. He is defintiely his mommy's boy but he loves me too. |
