Help! Faith is such a Night Owl!!! Hi everyone, Faith has now been home for 4 nights and she is doing great. My life is already so livened up. Everyone here loves her! However, I am having trouble with one thing. My baby sleeps most of the day and she stays up the entire night. I'm lucky if she takes one 20 min. nap all night long. Her mommy (me) is so behind on sleep lol. I keep her in a pen in my room at night, she has a little fluffy bed in there. She cannot sleep with me because she is only a little over 2 pounds. All she does at night is whimper and stand on her hind legs looking for me to take her out! When I give into her and take her out, boy is she a hyper little yorkie! I guess she is off schedule. Is there anything I can do? luv~ Christine :aimeeyork |
I know it sounds hard, but you have to ignore her whimpering. It doesn't feel constructive because you are still not getting any sleep, with her whimpering. But she will get the picture and tire herself out. Coco did that and I learned to ignore her the hard way, after 3-4 weeks of non sleep. It was my fault though, I would pick her up or try to tire her out. I was playing into her little scheme. But a couple of weeks of ignoring her and she sleeps through the night now. |
The first night with Olivia home was rough- she cried and cried and cried all night, it seemed. However, we made no noise each time she cried and never looked at her, got her up, etc. If you get your baby out of the pen when she cries, you're teaching her to cry to get her way. I would say that one night (maybe when you don't have to work the next day!) , don't take her out- no matter what. I swear I thought Olivia was being murdered a couple of times that night- she got so desperate for attention that it was like she was screaming! However, that is the only night we've had problems. Not sure how your pen is set up, but can you block her vision of you? Sometimes that helps. Also, wake her up during the day and make her play. Oilvia (unfortunatly) has to be in a crate during the day while I'm at work. However, I get up and hour and half before I have to leave so that she can play, I come home on my lunch so she has an hour to play (I know not everyone can do this) and she plays really hard for 6 or so hours after I get home for work. Now, if she wakes up during the night, I'll hear her eating or drinking and shifting around, but nothing else. Good luck with Faith! |
Maggie did the same. I don't know who cried more--Maggie or Me (from lack of sleep). I finally made a cover for her crate, and put it right beside my bed on a stool. She can't see me, but she knows I'm there. As long as I know she doesn't have to use the bathroom, I ignored her. Didn' take but a couple of nights, for her to realize I wasn't coming to the rescue. When she did cry in the night, I would look at the clock--and if it had been at least 3 hours, I would take her from the crate (no words spoken), take her outside to PP, back inside, and back into the crate. She would then sleep the rest of the night. Now she is 4 months old, goes to bed at 9PM and up at 7:30AM. The bags under my eyes are almost gone. :D |
good ideas Hi again, thank you both for the great advice. I am giving into her little scheme I know. . . I'm trying but it is so hard. It seems that I'm learning the hard way too, I'm sooo tired from these sleepless nights! And not like I can sleep during the day because I have college classes and or work. Aww, 3-4 weeks of no sleep must have really caught up to you! I'll do all I can to ignore her tonight. I only have trouble with her acting like this at night too. Good idea about waking her up to play during the day. If she is tired out enough she will have no choice but to sleep at night. Last night I played with her for hours before bed, but she didn't sleep the night, just a nap. I will keep at it. This is probably something most yorkies go through. Thanks for the help and luck! I have to bring Faith to the vet now for a shot, I'll be on YT later. I hope you are having a great day! luv~ Christine & faith :p |
Lol! LOL Stitches, I hear ya! I think Faith and I are about tied when it comes to who cries more haha. I'm glad to hear your bags are almost gone!!! :) |
It seems to be the norm for people to either let their yorkies sleep with them or in the same room but I do not. They have their individual kennels next to each other in the den, with a soft blanket, a toy, a little food and water. I am with them 24/7 ( I know I am lucky), so I think they like having their own space at night and I know I do. I love them but Chloe snores! |

There is nothing wrong with that. Every Yorkie parent raises their furkid different. If it works for you, then that is what a person should do. I too am with Maggie 24/7. She just likes having somebody close to her. Your babies have each other, so that is their company. |
