Looking for Breeding Advice I have a female yorkie that I would like to breed. I have found a nice little male yorkie to breed her with. I am looking for any information on breeding, what to expect, how to prepare etc. I have had her checked by a vet and she has given the go-ahead to do this. My only concern is that it appears that my girl has once had a caesarian section. My vet checked her and found a scar. Does this mean that she will have to have another or can she deliver on her own? My vet states that the main concern with this is that if she only carries one puppy, that puppy can become large making it difficult for her to deliver on her own. I want to be fair to my dog and not put her through more hardship than normal. Does anyone have any experience with this? |
I'm in the same shoes as you. Hopefully I'll be mating my Mimi this week. I still have some concerns myself, but I am sure that one of our experienced breeders here will be glad to guide you. How old is your female? If she's had a c-section we don't know how many litters she has had in the past.Especially if you don't know her backround and her past. I'm no expert, but there's only so many litters a female can have before complicating things.I'm sure you'll get the right answers here. GOOD LUCK. |
breeding Do you know her background for sure? Could she have been spayed? Once a female has had a section there is always a possiblity of adhesions. They can cause trouble with the next whelping..scar tissues prevents the uterus from contracting properly and can block the birth canal. BUT once a section does not always mean another...I would try to find out how many litters and how many pups she has had and why the need for the section..best wishes. PS...the Canadian Kennel club will tell you the bitches history..I think the AKC should also.. If I can be of any help, please let me know. |
Thank you for your quick reply I really appreciate your input. I just got Caleigh a month ago and the only information we got was that she is 7 years old and belonged to an older lady who passed away. We were told that she was once a show dog and you can see her tatoo but it is very faded. She has definitely had pups because her little boobies sag. It is unsure of how long ago she had them. You can see the scar from the caesarian but it is very faded which makes me wonder if she had pups since the caesarian. We would love to breed her because we would really like to have another yorkie to keep her company and because we are enjoying her so much. It is hard to find a yorkie in our price range. It seems that the average price around here is $1500. I would also like to see how things go to see if this is something that I might want to get into in the future. I really appreciate all the input you can give me. |
I don't know anything about breeding, so I'm sure that the breeders on here can help you better than I can, but I think 7 years maybe a little old to breed? I'm not sure. Also, I wouldn't breed her with the intention of saving money on another dog. I hear that it is very expensive to breed, especially if somehting unexpectedly goes wrong. Best of luck! |
7 years old is a little old to be breeding a female and you have no idea of her history as too why she had a c-section. I would not breed her, I just wouldn't risk it. |

breeding I have a feeling she has had a number of litters..I could be wrong. As a rule a female who has not been bred much will not get saggy. My Charlotte just had her 4th litter and last. That may sound like alot to a novice..but for a 6 yr old that is conservative breeding. Her breasts return to that of a younger female after nursing..you could not tell by looking at her that she has nursed a litter. I am not saying you can not breed her and have a good result, but the odds ara against you. If you do, I would have a planned section, her uterus could be worn out and not contract or rupture. reply I thank you all for your input. Of course my number one priority is Caleigh and her well-being. I am going to book another appointment with my vet. I am trying to investigate all angles of this endeavour before doing anything. If it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen and I will find another way to have another little yorkie in my life. I do have a picture of her and if I can figure out a way to put it on this site, I will. Again, thank you all for your input. It is nice to hear your opinions. It is nice to talk to yorkie lovers as well!! |
