I learned my lesson... Never again will I let Maddie be on the ground if there is a big dog nearby. Last evening, my daughter and I and the pups walked to the home of a guy that works with her to see some flowers he had. He has a dog...an English Pointer, who has always been a well behaved dog and trained well. I normally would hold Maddie if there is a big dog around, but because this dog was so harmless, I felt it okay to let Maddie walk around on her leash. The pups had been around this dog before with never a problem. Maddie was looking at the dog, wagging her tail and acted as if she wanted to make friends, when all of a sudden, this dog growled and lunged forward at her and went down on her with his mouth. Maddie let out a blood curdling yelp. This dog meant business! I yanked on the leash to get her away from him and the dog's owner got ahold of his dog. I pulled so hard on the leash, Maddie nearly flew through the air. She was wearing one of her harness dresses and I think that probably saved her from getting bitten as hard. The dog's owner said he didn't bite her, but I believe he did from the way Maddie cried out. She was so traumatized and I felt to bad for her. Also felt like a rotten mom because I should have been holding her. Never again will I think she is safe with a big dog around...no matter how nice they are. I come on YT tonight and read about the 3 babies that are gone and can't stop crying. Maddie could have very well been number 4 if we hadn't been right there to stop that dog. I thank the good Lord that she's still with me, but pray for all who have lost their little sweeties. |
I always pick Chewy up when there are any dogs around because he is barely 2 and a half pounds. It can be very scary. The other day I was walking him and out from a building came a pitbull!!! We were barely a few feet away and the dog sort of came at Chewy. I got startled and just pulled him up towards me - thank god for the harness!!!- and as we walked by this beast was looking at Chewy and lunging forward, all he was thinking was LUNCH  You can never trust another dog owner to be responsible with their pets, so I always feel like I am on the defensive, it's sad. |
Absolutely great advice! |
Im glad that Maddie is fine. I also do not trust other dogs, you never know what can happen. I always hold Gucci when i see a big dog close by. |
Obviously you have to keep them safe but I must say not all large dogs are going to attack small ones. Many large dogs live happily side by side with tinies with no problem at all, in fact the tinies rule the roust at home ;) Very glad to hear you little one is OK. |
That is quite a scare for little Maddie! It's always better to be safe than sorry, and don't worry if anyone gives you problems or snickers or makes any rude comments if you pick up your Yorkie, remember it's NOT THEIR Yorkie! |
I really do understand you - I did the same in the beginning. But I have found out that most bigger dogs are terrified of Kali because she is not submissive (at least I think that's why) and I have trained her to be around other dogs. I am not sure however that I will have the same faith in Mare - she is so silly and cute, I am not sure she sends the same confident signals...time will tell... |

You my dear are a good, caring, and loving doggie mom  |
How great you were quick thinking ! Not all big dogs will do this but it's WAY better to be safe than sorry and you have a living yorkie because of your fast actions...It's so easy for a tragedy to happen as we see here today losing 3 angels.....I'm so happy to hear you had a happy ending to what could have been another sad sad loss..... |
I am very glad that maddie is okay . Yesterday afternoon , I was walking with Zsa Zsa in my arms and Jade on leash when I heard " attack " , I just had time to grab Jade and saw a Pittbull coming at me . I was with a friend , my friend reacts by giving a kick at the dog's jaws . The dog was so surprised and run to his so-called owner . This morning , I'll go to the stores and purchase the pet carrier that I saw the other day . |

As I said , I'll buy a new carrier for my walks with the girls . I think the girls will be safer in this and can take fresh air . I can have it in black , blue or green . |
Little Maddie! OMG! Everytime I read more and more stories on here I get more and more protective of my little Cookie. That is so scary! I hope she's doing ok now. I'm sure you both were a little shaken up after that incident :(. I'm glad to hear nothing too serious happened to Maddie. I will keep you and the other 3 little Yorkies and owners in my prayers. |
WOW! You are lucky that she wasn't hurt. It is a good thing that both owners were there or something very bad could have happened. Count your blessings on this one! |
I am mad  everytimes I hear stories like that . What happens with these peoples ? They surely have serious bee's nest between their two ears . These peoples should never have the rights to own a dog .I really hope your little ones are okay and not too traumatized by these bad experiences . The unfair thing in the stories of dogs attacking peoples or other dogs is , it is always the dogs who have to pay more than the owners . The dogs are euthanazied and the owner is free to mess with another dog . It is a real shame |
I know this is really tragic. I walk my dogs where others do and now I don't know if I will ever trust another dog that approaches. Something so simple can end up so tragic so quickly. |
Many years ago, my dad lived on 5 acres. He had a very sweet male Chesapeake Bay retriever. His neighbor let his little male Yorkie run around loose and oftentimes it would come over to my dad's house. My dad would call the neighbor politely and say your dog is over here, you need to come get him. The Yorkie's owner was over confident with his dog and said things like he's little but he's really tough. He could take on your dog. Well it wasn't long before the inevitable happened. The Yorkie came over to my dad's house and his Chesapeake Bay retriever was outside. The Yorkie approached the big dog by growling and the big dog just chomped down on the little dog and killed it instantly. My dad witnessed it and felt terrible but it wasn't his fault. It was the Yorkie's owner for not protecting his dog. Let's try to keep them safe from bigger dogs. |
I have a shepherd who wieghhs at least 105lbs. Even though he is extremly a well tempered dog I can tell when he has had enough of macy and i seperate the 2. The shep goes down stairs and macy stays upstairs where i can keep an eye on her. I know he wouldnt outright attack her but i dont want take the chance cause macy can be a lil brat sometimes towards him. Sometimes i think she has no fear that lil 2 1/2 lb ball of fur gets really fiesty at times lol. |
I would have been terrified! I am glad everything turned out okay. |
Sometimes I think I'm too paranoid or too overprotective. But after reading about the lost angels  I realized I should be, I have reason to be. Since Coco is getting her last set of shots next week, I thought I will put her on a leash, since the weather is nice, and just let her discover the driveway for 5 minutes. She is having a great time just running in circles around me on the driveway when I notice a german shepard, running loose in the street, and a pit bull across the street (neighbors dog, always lose, never tied up). I just picked her up as fast as I could, grabbed my nephew and went inside. Who knows what could happen. My dad went next door and told our other neighbors that they need to be more careful of their german shepard, because he had escaped. I would tell the across the street neighbors to tie their dog up but they're moving already. I just get so mad when people don't consider other peoples pets or property. I'm so glad that Maddie is ok. Was the owner of the big dog nice about it at least? |

This weekend I was at the Pet Expo in Pamona and my friend bought a pet stroller, I loved it. I looks just like a baby stroller so it doesn't attract much attention. I think if your going to walk them in the park or street this is very safe, easy to push with a basket on the bottom to put their things and it also had a cup holder  |

would you find it easier to trust a owner if they said there big dog has yorkie friends? just wondering. i'm so glad she is ok thats the last thing we need around here is another tradgedy. |
I can't help but think that big dogs see prey when they look at these little dogs or perhaps it is mostly hunting dogs. I've wondered about that, but we had a big dog once that was very, very protective of our little chihuahua. Who knows? All dogs are different, I suppose. |

I know there are many big dogs who could not harm a fly... but..since I don't know who they are I take no chances. The minute I see I big dog coming towards me (even if they are leashed) I pick Desi up. I know what it was like to shed tears because a big dog "that would never hurt a fly" chomped down on my little Maltese killing her instantly. Better safe than sorry. |
That must of been very scary for both of you. I can imagine her little heart was pounding and your blood pressure was up. I am happy she does not have any broken bones or cuts. |

I myself are looking like crazy for the best buy right now. The one I like so far I found for $ 110.00, but I'm still looking. |
Thanks for all your replies! I always pick up Maddie when I see a big dog also. I don't want to imply that I think all big dogs are going to attack, but I just don't want to take a chance. The reason I let her stay on the ground this time was because she'd been around this dog before and never once had he shown any aggression towards her or the other pups and I felt pretty confident at the time...but...as I said earlier...never again. I will be holding her in the presence of any big dog. I love the stroller idea, but Maddie loves her walks...actually walking. Maddie is doing fine and thanks you for all your well wishes! I am thankful to all of you too! |

I am so sorry that happened and I am glad she is okay. And thank you for sharing that story with us. I am really learning how important it is to keep and eye on my babies at all times. |
