Yorkie mum with wavy coat?? Hello everyone. im new here, this is my first post. I have just purchasd my first yorkie puppy and am awaiting delivery in a week or so. I have a question regarding the yorkie coat and hope that someone here can offer advice. The yorkie i am buying is a pedigree, however, photo's of the mum show a trimmed and wavy coat. I am wondering if the coats can be wavy because they are trimmed shortish and would generally be straight if grown full length? any advice would be most appreciated. regards, jo |

welcome to YT! Congratulations on your new puppy! |
if you look at my website, one of my females Frankie has the kind of hair you are talking about. I keep her cut in a puppy cut all the time. Last winter i decided to grow it long and much to my surprise, the longer it got the straighter it got but it still matted underneath so i cut it off again. i breed her to my silky coated malee with nice coats on the puppies. |
My female Baby has a longer puppy cut and her hair is wavy. Closer to her tail when it gets wet, it's curly. I love it though! Congrats on your new puppy and welcome to YT! |
Hi everyone. thanks for the replies. My little puppy is a boy. We have named him Mr Bailey. I will take some nice photos when he gets here so i can post them here. Does anyone have any tips for types of shampoo and conditioner that are good for yorkie pups? I have already ordered him a bed, its a blue baby cradle. Its just gorgeous. I also have a puppy carrier to bring him home in. I have a brush and some food as well as a harness and collar and lead. Is there anything particular that i need for a new yorkie puppy that i have not thought of yet? |

They also make a conditioner, but it is not tearless. |
My oldest girl, 12 now...that's her photo at the side, always had a really good coat, very straight, silky & thick, that trailed the floor it was so long. Last summer it was quite hot here, an unprecidented event up here on our moors where the rain constantly blows sideways :D . She's on medication for heart failure & was really struggling in the heat, so I cut her coat very short to help keep her cool. I've let it grow a bit since but keep it at about 2 to 3 inches; as it's thick it's enough to keep her warm without troubling her with too much grooming. As it's grown it's become wavy without the weight to drag it down. It actually looks really nice, cute, & gave her a new lease of life so she acts a bit like a puppy now as well as looks like one! :) |
Although they're supposed to have straight hair, I have seen a lot of them with a wave..My biewer I keep short(puppy cut) because his hair is terrible...his waves, my yorkie that is almost 5 has very straight hair, and the silky texture, which makes it very easy to comb out...can't wait to see pictures.. |
Piper has really wavy hair. It's wavy whether it's short or long. |
i have heard that the Summerwind products, shampoo and conditioner is good for taming unruly hair and a lot of show people use it. i haven't tried it yet but am going to. |
:animal36 Hi everyone. The info has been great. I had assumed that some coats might show a wave if cut short because that is what happens with human hair so that is all good. But as the breed standard says that they must have a straight coat, can they still be shown etc if they have a wave in the coat? How does that all work? |
I've never seen a silky-coated yorkie with waves in their hair just because of being cut short. A friend of mine has a yorkie with a silky coat but it's really wavy all the time, no matter how long or short it is. My parents have a yorkie with a cottony coat. Right now it is cut really short (like an inch long) and is pretty wavy looking. But I've seen his hair pretty long before and it's always straight when kept brushed out. So it is possible the hair could be straight if longer. I would just see how wavy the hair is - if just slightly wavy it would probably straight out...but very wavy or curly wouldn't straighten out |
