Can Yorkies swim? Can Yorkies swim? I asked the vet who said, "Yes, but it's not a good idea." The reason I ask is because I have a swimming pool and I live on a lake. I don't want her to drown. My puppy lives inside with us. I've heard that owls and hawks will eat your pet. We have poisonous toads that will kill even big dogs. So I know she shouldn't be outside without supervision. I just need to know if drowning is another danger. |
Chester and Gracie go swimming with me...but only if I am there in the water with them. I will not let them go with my children. |

I was actually curious myself. At what age is it a good idea to introduce them to a pool. We have a swimming pool in my parents' yard back home and when I go there I always swim. She always wants to but I'm afraid the chlorine might be bad for her, and that she might get sick from the cold water. She is 17 weeks but I'm just being the chicken here. Is she too young, can she get sick? |

It's an interesting thing - but all yorkies cannot swim! I had heard that but thought it was an old wive's tale, but it's true. So don't assume that your little yorkster will automatically take to swimming - some love it and love swimming in their pools, but others just don't "get it" and can sink right to the bottom. Lily can swim but she isn't fond of it. She mostly just gets in with me to get a drink and then is ready to get out. |
Teddy goes in our pool and can swim if he wants to that is. He is not allowed in unless I bring him though. He mainly prefers floating with me to actual swimming around. |
Does the Chlorine bothers anyone's babies? Mine is 17 weeks, so I don't know if she is too young. |
Saffron seems to like coming in the pool with me & cooling off. She started to do her little dog paddle stroke the very 1st time she went in the pool. I don't think she's too keen on doing alot of swimming but she doesn't seem to mind a short swim to the stairs. Her favorite is to stand on a tubing & net float while I push it around the pool. I'm not super concerned about her exposure to the pool chemicals as we use Bacqucil (sp) sanitizer instead of chlorine. It doesn't burn or smell or make our eyes red & our hair (Saffie's & mine) is nice & soft when we get out of the pool. I also have a small wading pool for when I'm sitting outside with her. She'll spend the whole time amusing herself by batting a little leaf around the bottom of the pool. (She likes that better than her floating toys.) :animal-sm |
I agree - all yorkies cannot swim - even those that CAN swim my get disoriented if they accidentally fall in and drown just like people can in a panic - To always be safe.... never let your yorkie around water unless you are right there....Good luck and I hope you have fun swimming with your baby...but be careful ! |
I took Brutus in the pool yesterday for the first time and he loved it! I had him on a raft and then I dunked his paws in. Before he even touched the water those little legs were going so fast! I only let him swim by himself for maybe 5 seconds but he can swim! Of course I never let Brutus do anything unsupervised. I'm very over protective. I wanted a video of it but my husband didn't hold down the button on the camera. Duh!! |
We found out Gracie could swim when she was 6 months old. We took her to the local park and there was a huge duck pond. We all happily walked around the pond and Gracie was VERY interested in the ducks. She finally could not control herself any more and dove, I mean, dove into the pond and started swimming as fast as she could after the ducks. I reeled her back in and hauled her out of the water. I was shocked since it happened so fast. Everyone at the duck pond though had a good laugh! The ducks were bigger than Gracie! hee hee |
