How do you introduce cats to Yorkies? My sister just adopted a Persian cat and Simon and Nigel never stopped barking at him. Simon even tried to pull on its tail. Any suggestions? Right now we have them in different rooms, but they cannot live like this forever. |
How old is the persian cat ? If it is a kitten , he'll need a little time to adjust . He'll soon show the yorkies how to respect him . I have a persian cat too and believe me she knows what to do when Jade is too heavy with her . |
I wish I could give you some advice. Im allergic to cats so I don't have any. All i can do is hope for the best that everything works out for you. Im sure it will, it just takes time for them to get used to each other. GOOD LUCK! |
Just this past March, my Himalayan passed away. I remember 14 years ago when we brought him home to meet our CHOW.. I was so concerned. Each day, I would take Moken outside on my lap to see Buzzer. I never let Moken off my lap, for fear of Buzzer having a snack. Buzzer would sniff, back up, sniff again. I just kept saying to Buzzer, "Easy, It's a Baby", in a gentle tone. I never pushed Buzzer away. That would only cause him to be more jealous and agressive. As days went by, I started putting Moken down on the porch, next to my feet. Buzzer would just sniff. After a few weeks, Moken was no longer a novelty. |
Our dogs are terrified of the cats. :cat: :cat: Sometimes they play, but the cats get tired of it and turn on them. Now the cats will rub up against the pups, and the pups freeze. They get this horrified look on their face :eek: and when the cat looks away - they bolt. It is hillarious! :animal-sm :eyetearss |
dogs and cats pretty much introduce themselves. i have 2 cats and they were both fine with tucker. well he comes up behind them and grabs there tails and jumps on top of them. and he also chases them around. only one of them, muffin, (who knows she is queen) really has a problem with it. she got tucker once and now they know to stay away from eachother. but when you introduce them try to keep the dog on the leash becuase they are the ones who will make teh first move. good luck! |
Step one: Cut the cat's nails. Step two: correct the dogs by telling them NO...when they bark at the cat. Until the dogs get bored or the cat thuds the dog, it will keep up. Mya got a wack up side the head from Emily. Mya now respects Emily the 16 year old cat and they even sleep together sometimes. Mya licks Emily on the nose every day to say good morning and Emily lets her. It is stressful for cat to be in a new home, nevermind demanding little dogs. It will just take time. |
Sake and boys I have an almost three year old 20 pound Siamese named Sake', I inherited her from my youngest daughter when Sake was 5 months old as my dd was allergic. My boys are 14 and 15 months old and I have had them both since they were 3 and 4 months respectively. I did nothing special, jsut let them adjust on their own. Sake is very tolerant of them, she will let them wrestle with her and when she has had enough, she just bats at them with her paws (does not use her nails, never has on the boys). All three sleep with me. The all play chase, hide and seek, drink out of the same water bowl, and occasionally (when I don't catch them) eat each others food. They coexist peacefully for the most part. I love to watch them play together and sleep together. My neighbor just got a jack russel mix and was going crazy keeping them (his three year old cat) separate. I told him to let the cat out of the bedroom and the cat would lay the ground rules, once the cat has established what she will/will not tolerate the dog will learn to interact or not with her and it worked. |
Although we don't have a cat of our own, my brother has a Tabby named Cotton..and when we go visit them, our girls love to play with Cotton, although she is not always as fond of them...when Cotton was younger we would only let them play for a little bit at a time, but now when Cotton is tired of everything she knows how to get away... My suggestion would to slowly let them have connect with them and when they start barking tell them NO...that way they know that they are going to have to get along with the cat....hope that helps... |
VEEEEEEERRRRRRRY CAREFULLY! Actually, they need to be introduced on a neutral ground when possible. I don't have cats, but all of my family does. My brats run over to the cats to be friends but they soon learn, the cats are different. They can jump really high straight up and they smack you good up side the head. Helps tremendously if the cat is declawed...Dogs can suffer eye injuries if the cat has front claws.. |
Coco was fine with Toffee (our cat) Just make sure they are both shown as much affection as each other and introduce them slowly and they'll be ok together. -and be patient! |

We didn't think about "the introduction" with Olivia and Theo. We set Olivia in the living room when we first got her home and she ran over the Theo and jumped all over him to get him to play. He never hissed or has tried to scratch her. Now, they are the best of friends (after about 3 1/2 weeks.) Theo will "coo" (a whiny cry) at Olivia's crate in the morning to wake her up before my alarm goes off. If I take Olivia in the bathroom with me while I shower or get ready in the morning, he "coos" at the door to get in. Then, they play peek-a-boo- Theo gets in the tub and Olivia stays out, and they play around the shower curtain. They are great together- it's wonderful! Of course, I miss out on a lot of Olivia time because she loves to wrestle and play with Theo for hours on end. Theo is still young, though- about 10 months when we got her, 11 months now. The cats at my mom's house run when they see her. In fact, the younger one (Theo's sister) ran this weekend before she even saw Olivia! We bring a gate to my mom's to keep Olivia locked in the kitchen, away from stairs, etc.- and Libby ran as soon as she saw my mom putting the gate up! My mom's cats will definitely take some time to warm up to her! |
